What is Land Rover InControl?

Here’s everything you need to know about Land Rover’s InControl infotainment system

Land Rover Discovery 2017 - official incontrol touch pro

Land Rover models now offer a broad range of infotainment, safety and connectivity systems that are operated through the touchscreen or complimentary app. The catch-all term for it in Land Rover speak is InControl, and the system covers almost all the electronic systems in the vehicle.

The starting point for the InControl system, which is also offered in Jaguars, is the touchscreen display which varies in its sophistication depending on the model. Older and less-expensive models such as the first- generation Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport may be fitted with the Touch 8-inch system. Touch Pro is the mid-range offering with a 10-inch screen that also offers pinch-to-zoom and voice recognition, while the latest high-specification models such as Range Rover Velar have Touch Pro Duo with twin 10-inch screens.

While the functionality varies across the different versions, the basis for the system is a display made up of tiles to navigate the screens and make selections, alongside a set of ‘hard’ keys to allow you to switch quickly between systems. The basic Touch system includes satellite navigation with 2D and 3D maps, control of the audio system (including DAB radio) and head-up display, although the basic Touch system is no longer fitted to new Land Rover vehicles it will be found on a lot of pre-owned models.

Touch Pro is the system most-commonly fitted across the Land Rover range at the moment and its higher-specification screen allows increased functionality, notably the ability to pinch and zoom maps and use voice recognition. The satellite navigation (Navigation Pro) includes traffic data and the ability to choose a destination on your smartphone and send it to your car.

Touch Pro systems also included Meridian sound systems (unless otherwise specified) the clever Dual View Display system and a Virtual Instrument Display on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models. As an upgrade on some models Touch Plus is available, which allows for the higher-level Meridian audio systems to be fitted and controlled.

The Touch Pro Duo system has two 10-inch screens which allows more than one system to be operated at the same time, and as well as the screen itself there are Dynamic Dials that operate whichever system is in use alongside capacitive controls on the steering wheel instead of hard buttons.

Touch Pro Duo also includes a more sophisticated head-up display with higher resolution and full colour, and there is the option of a 12.3-inch digital instrument display too.

InControl Protect is the name for Land Rover’s connected services, ranging from Land Rover Assistance and emergency SOS call-out to vehicle locating and checking fuel levels, accessed through the InControl Remote smartphone app. The app works on both iOS and Android operating systems, and there is an Apple Watch version of the app too, though some of the more advanced services require a subscription, depending on the model.
