New Tesla Model Y 7-Seater now available to order from £54k

The 7-seat Model Y gets two extra forward-facing seats in the boot, and costs £2,500 more

Tesla fans with big families no longer need to feel left out, as the Tesla Model Y 7-Seater is now on sale in the UK. Prices start from £54,490, which is £2,500 more than the equivalent five-seat version.

That new third row is accessible via buttons mounted on the rear seats which slide forward and fold to make stepping inside easier. This pair of extra seats do have some amenities including two cupholders, USB-C ports and matching black or white leatherette upholstery. Sadly there’s no additional touchscreen like the one mounted in the middle row, nor are there Isofix points, which isn’t ideal for fitting child seats.

For the time being, the Model Y 7-Seater is only being offered with the Long Range All-Wheel Drive powertrain. This offers up to 372 miles of range, making the Model Y one of the longest-range seven-seat EVs you can buy. Twin electric motors – one on each axle – produce 370bhp and can propel you and six passengers from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds.

Tesla says that despite its prodigious performance, the Model Y 7-Seater should still offer plenty of space; there’s 381 litres or, in plain English, sufficient space for two aeroplane-style carry-on suitcases behind the third row. The 116-litre ‘frunk’ is also roomy enough for two large soft bags or, if you need to plug-in when out and about, your charging cables.

With the third row stowed there’s 778 litres of space behind the rear seats, which is not all that far off what’s offered by the Kia EV9 – a car costing roughly £10,000 more than the Tesla.

First deliveries of the Tesla Model Y 7-Seater are set to begin in May. This comes soon after the launch of the new, cheapest variant of the Model Y, the Rear-Wheel Drive (previously called ‘Standard’), which starts from £41,990.
