Watch out Volkswagen, Volvo is teeing up its Golf rival. The Swedish firm is set to launch a practical, five-door version of its C30 hatch. But creating the newcomer doesn’t merely involve grafting on an extra set of doors.
To compete with the best in the class, such as the Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, the C30 will be given a complete design makeover. Its look will usher in a more distinctive Volvo styling language, which new chief executive Stefan Jacoby is keen to implement.
He is concerned that the marque’s DNA has become diluted by pursuing its German rivals too intently. Instead, the firm’s new cars will have a renewed emphasis on Scandinavian design, which means keeping things simple and elegant on the outside, while interiors remain minimalist but with more interesting choices of materials. Technology inspired by Apple’s latest products is likely to make its debut in the new car, too.
Jacoby believes the XC60 is the model that’s closest to what Volvo should be doing, so expect the new five-door to be heavily influenced by the look of the SUV, with a distinctive nose, sculpted flanks and L-shaped tail-lights.
The model, due in 2012, will also require an overhaul inside. While the current three-door C30 looks the part, its rear seats are very cramped. The new car’s passenger and luggage space will rival that of the class leaders.
The five-door project has been promoted to the top of Volvo’s priority list, forcing the brand to put development of a replacement for the XC90 SUV on hold. It’s hoped that the new car will re-establish Volvo as a more significant player in Europe, as hatchbacks are still not big sellers in the US.
The firm will also seek to use its new Chinese owner Geely to its advantage, rapidly expanding its presence in that market and building a new factory there. Volvo is also putting the finishing touches to its US strategy, with the ultimate goal of increasing sales from the current 335,000 per year to 800,000 in a decade’s time.

VOLVOS ARE FOR OLD PEOPLE
Yes I agree CARSARETHEBEST that Volvo does have that image but it seems they are going in a new Design Direction, judging by this. I like the boldness of the rear lights and window,
has a breath of fresh air about! I would say it makes some of it's rivals look bland and unimaginative in comparison! Well done Volvo!
Interesting that some people can judge from a drawing which car is the best. And if Volvo is for old people I assume Volkswagen is only used at funerals. Their designs are boring and dreadful (or deadful). Almost as dreadful as Audi.
I am sure Volco are working on a 5 door version of the S40/V50/C30. Just dont expect it to look anythimg like this auto(Sun)express photoshop lash up. After all, the S40 that the current C30 is derived from will be an 8 year old design by 2012!
I think it looks a bit like Alfa giulietta.. ? ore at least the side and doors
OK, carsarethe best, so in the words of Harry Hil. Which is best VW Tiguan (you know, the commercial vehicle with rear side windows) or Volvo XC60?
Theres only one way to decide....
Why do all modern cars have to be so tastelessly flashy and falsely 'sporty'. This was, along with BMW's impatience, what killed the excellent Rover 75, actually a very sober, comfortable and attractive touring car, which, for the first time in decades, actually resembled a bloody Rover!! These styling boyos have got sports shoes lodged in the brain. This is frankly hideous, and far far away from the good Volvo image. They have become frightened and nervous, and seem to want to turn out cheap popular Ford-style designs now. Gruesome.
This is why i wont be buying the hideous disaster that is the new ford focus
Judging from the pictures, this Volvo seems like a Focus Mk2 designed properly. I realy like Volvo's design language since Hornbury updated the brand's stead image, if Volvo makes the car with a roomier rear passenger space and boot, and price it lower than the ubiquitous Golf, then I feel that Volvo will be onto a winner.
Desperate to be different but pig ugly!
Volvo have always struggled to produce a car with style.
Sadly this is no exception.
Am i the only person that is sick to death of that grill. design?
Volvo cars have been stylish in the past - Volvo 1800 ES, 1800 saloon, Volvo 480 ES, even the C30 is better than most. Not a bad photo shop effort AE, but there's to be a new grille/face that will carry onto future models.
I was choosing between the older c30 t5 and r32 and I chose the Golf due to the Haldex, but if they bring this redesigned c30 to US , I will be all over it even with no AWD!
The problem with Volvo is that they have too familiar a face and therefore all end up looking exactly the same. I test drove a C30 and was appalled by it, horrible quality interior with sharp edges and ill-fitting trim. I just dont see the point. Does anybody seriously feel inspired by any particular Volvo model, more to the point, does anyone actually know what Volvo's model range is called these days?
Definitely a breath of fresh air in a market dominated by overweight, bland clones.
Nice looking motor but will it have a spare wheel rather than a useless tyre sealant kit as the new S60 has?
...it would seem the population of this forum are very hard to please. If we're not bitching about cars that all look the same, we're slating manufacturers for daring to be different. Volvo have always done their own thing, as have Saab, regardless of who were holding the reigns. Let's celebrate these 'diamonds in the rough' and give them the encouragement they deserve...
One of these days some of the people who drive around in the over priced and under speced "GERRY" cars will wake up and realize what they have been missing , when it suddenly dawns on them that they are the only people who have not yet found out what the rest of car drivers have known for years.
And that is! All German cars are vastly over priced, under specced, and do not come out better in reliability or residual value at the end of the day
Wonderful.

Let me guess. You either own or are going to buy a Corolla like millions of other sheep out there.
The one I drove was like a gokart and had no quality issues?!

Wow nice car but we all know ford owns volvo, so it's just a FORD FOCUS but mi what a focus it beats VW'S & AUDI'S BORING I MEAN STYLING YAAAAWWWN.
About time too, let's see what Volvo can do now they're free of the restrictions of competing with Ford products...
That is actually smart looking, well done Volvo! Do me a favour and get rid of them stupid interior GREEN lights for the dashboard... that has seriously put me off the S60 for my next car!
The Golf is getting boring and extremely common. A new, fresh take on the medium sized family sector, like this Volvo, could become either very popular or flop. And to those who think Volvo is for old people - I've seen more old people in Volkswagens and Fords! I hope it makes it unchanged from these images.

Hello, friends. You can go to this site to see. Which the products are brand shoes and clothes, bags, glasses, bikini, etc.. Low prices, high quality. You will definitely need to. I bought here a few times, really great product. Now describe to you . (((www.abcneed.com )))
I see its becoming a very common trend for business owners to plok their websites and advertised in these blogs without proper consent and paid rights......quite frankly, i don't give a damn! but its rather annoying to read about what other reader's think about the cars and topic that's meant to generate interest, to fin people side lining you to go look at clothing nonsense.
As for the car....i'm loving the shape. It really does provide a fresh look to whats otherwise a dead phase when it comes to hot family hatch rides. If you can use your imagination and picture this ride with some custom from lips and the right colour, you'll have yourself one wicked looking ride. forget about the dodo-bird the sister company is to release and follow in the direction they were meant to go. Photoshop or nort....Nicely done!!!
Volvo's for old people? T6 AWD 304 bhp and all have sports chassis and 6 speed boxes, even the D3 and D5 diesel engines have earth shattering performance matted to exceptional fuel economy.
As for the range:
C30 Coupe
C70 convertible
S40 compact executive
S60 medium executive
S80 large executive
V50 Compact estate
V60 medium sports estate
XC60 small SUV
XC90 Large SUV
It's a fairly simple to follow line up. Not sure I could do the same with Audi, BMW or VW and their mental product line ups!
As for the previous poster, agreed, why do AE not stop these annoying plugs for the shite clothing brands shamelessly advertising their crap on AE's website
If miraculously this PS image ends up being very similar to the end product then from a style point of view Volvo has the future in the looks department.
All they need to do is make sure they price the D3 engined (or equivelant) version at around £20,000 RRP & aim it correctly at volume sales & not be silly trying to re-coupe too much too soon for production costs then this will be a winner!
Come on Volva - you clearly now have the design with your latest XC60,S60, V60, comfort & safety reputation in spades, be careful on your proposed costs & kick the Golf into touch!

How can you say the C30 is an aweful car with poor build quality. You clearly dont know volvos at all do you!?
I fell in love with the C30 the minute i put my foot down, build quality was fantastic, and felt very solid.
As for volvos for old people, what rubbish!! I think volvo are starting to appeal more and more to younger people like myself who are in the market for a pratcial family car with stylish looks to suit!!
This looks a nice better alternative to the mainstream Golf, Focus, etc.. I hope it can live up to the German quality. Volvo feels very much like a Ford still.
I hope the real car looks as good as this rendering. Kudos to the auto illustrator that created this image!!!
