Look what Auto Express's spies have caught driving-off in Germany! These are the pictures that prove the Volkswagen Golf remains on target for a 2012 launch.
While the heavily disguised machine doesn't appear to give much away in terms of design and detail, we can reveal that under the skin dramatic changes have been made - hence the car's long absence from our news pages.
This mule, testing near VW's Wolfsburg HQ, is the first seen by Auto Express since mid-2010. According to our sources, the car’s platform has been completely redesigned.
What's more, the wheelbase of the car has been lengthened, and a new platform architecture, dubbed "MQB" introduced. This arrangement is far more versatile than the previous chassis, used by the Mk VI Golf.
That means drivers can expect the launch of this car to spawn a huge family of Golf-based cars over the coming years, including new versions of the Touran, Golf Plus and Scirocco.
The new model will have a larger boot than rivals like the Ford Focus and Renault Megane, and is promising more legroom in the rear.
Since we last saw the newcomer, there are new engines and high tech options too.
A wide range of TSI supercharged and turbocharged editions will be available, including a flagship 300bhp 2.0-litre unit, and an efficient 1.2-litre 65bhp engine capable of returning 60mpg.
On top of this, Volkwagen also plans a 100mpg plug-in hybrid, as well as an all-electric version, called the e_BlueMotion.
Diesel engines will include 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI offerings. As standard, entry-level cars will drive the front wheels through a six speed manual gearbox, while flagship machines are tipped to offer the firm's seven-speed DSG semi automatic gearbox. Four-wheel-drive will be available on the most powerful cars.
And that's not all, the new Golf promises class leading technology too. If you look closey at our shots, you will see a third lense in the centre of the front bumper. This new "eye" will offer drivers automatic speed limit warnings, plus link to the car's new "lane keep" driver assistance systems.
Inside, an advanced trip computuer is also expected to offer web access, as well as the very latest satellite navigation and phone connectivity systems.
According to our reports, the new Golf is primed to appear at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012, before going on sale in October that year.
Prices will be announced closer to the car's launch.

New look?!
You're kidding!
I think the camerman needs glasses, this is not the new shape Golf!
Everyone at AE, down to specsavers!

I think the camerman needs glasses, this is not the new shape Golf!
All the comments bash this saying the camera operator needs glasses, yet the first two words of the third paragraph states "This mule...". I think people need to read before commenting!
If this is the Mk7 chassis with "longer wheelbase" underneath a Mk6 body, then why aren't the wheels closer to the corners of the car?
Apart from the ugly wheelarch extensions on the rear, it looks identical to the Mk6 I'm looking at sitting in my driveway.
I saw it in Tesco`s car park yesterday and I thought it was an old one, silly me
The last refresh was 2009 wasn't it? thats a life cycle of 3 years, half most cars! Granted the last one wasn't an entire overhaul but it still seems a short life cycle!
Usual selection of unnecessarily cynical comments however 'aplads' is right and most of these commentators do not appear to have read the article. I do find the, sometimes ridiculous, comments quite amusing though - if only I could be sure that they were meant to be.
Pay no heed AE - carry-on trying to bring us the various items of news. Serious 'petrol-heads', even oldies like me, want to be kept up-to-date. Speculation has to be offered occasionally and I will always be sure to take the advice of 'aplads' and READ first.
I must be missing something here? the scoop which shows the 'heavily' disguised car. Why bother? just write a spec sheet
Indeed, Gregorious. It didn't take many lines of reading to establish that the strap line was wrong. But AE does say it "reveal[s] a new look".
And let's all ask Autoexpress what a 'lense' is while we're at it.
Its heavily disguised to look exactly like the current model. That is very clever indeed isn't it.
aplads, Gregorius, - Contrary to your assertion, I DID read the article. The sub-heading (that's the bit at the top, just below the headline) says - "Latest spy shots reveal a new look and advanced chassis for the Mk VII Volkswagen Golf". Try as I might, I cannot see how these spy shots reveal a "new look". And I certainly cannot see how they reveal the "new advanced chassis".
Plus, if the proposed Mk VII has a lengthened wheelbase and a new "MQB" platform architecture, how can VW test it within the existing car? (Hint no. 1: the wheel arches would be in the wrong place!)
Read the article fools

I did read the article aplads, but whats the ruddy point in calling it "a spy shot when it has the present body shell?
Its like someone publishing at picture of Barry Manilows latest facelift and using an old picture.Hardly news!
I understand from the article that the car seen in the picture is a mule. That I understand is a new chassis, suspension etc being tested under an existing body which from the wheel arch blanks looks as though its got "temporary works". Maybe the article should have been written with only one picture with an explanation that the bodywork shown is possibly not the final incarnation (excuse the pun!) However, if this is an indication of the final look then, I hope not, its as solidly boring as the current model styling. We'll wait and see....
STILL looks crap...
'Spect it was just broken down - see a lot of broken-down Golfs lately on trips up and down motorway.
Lets not forget that a cars reliability depends on not only the manufacturer and service point but also on the owner. If a lot are breaking down on the motorways; it may be down to the owners skimping on maintenance costs........... however this is a "premium brand" which used to have an advert which said Volkswagen Golf, Very tough old boots as it dropped to the ground! Maybe they are not so good anymore or maybe its a result of law of numbers; there are thousands around so the chances of seeing a busted one increases. I will say though that from a relatives' experience some components on VAG products do seem to give more than their fair share of problems.
My first Golf was a 3 door 1.1 L which I bought in 1975. Over the years I've owned three Golfs, which were all slightly bigger than the previous model. The original one is probably the size of the Fox, but was perfectly adequate and roomy. Now they're just getting too big, so I'll wait for the new Lupo which will be perfectly suited to my needs. My brother has a seven year old Golf which seems fine, apart from the rather gloomy interior, which is a common complaint with most VW's. Perhaps this next model will address that, although it seems that owners have not been put off by dull colour combinations, particularly in lower spec models.
for people who dont care about cars. There is the problem with the Golf or any VW for that matter, they dont stir the soul, there is nothing interesting about them at all. You dont look at these cars and think Wow that looks amazing.
Sorry VW but untill you start again with the externals, the internals and the over all look of everything associated with this car you are never going to have another classic on your hands.
Yes yet again Autoexpress deploy the old trick of using a headline to sell magazines that is a complete lie.
ive read the article and yes it does say mule but so what. i know ill go and stick some black wheelarches on a Scirocco and say the next generation scirocco spied.
Then AE go on to speculate and speculate about engines and spec.
This is why i stopped buying the magazine. Totally pointless even News of the world couldnt have made it up any better
VW are coming out with all these new Mk's very quickly. just seems like 2 weeks ago they came out new Mk golf then last week they came out with another one.
are they really letting the golf's take full advantage of the sales potential in the market before coming out with a new one
WoW! I don't own a Golf but if I did I would burn rubber to the VW dealer to trade it in for one of these NEW ones! The styling is simply breakthrough.
This is the car I bought two years ago. THIS IS NOT THE NEW GOLF!!!!
AE should have made it clearer that they hid this one in mk vi body. At least in it's GTI configuration I happen to love the m vi body, I must be more aesthetically challenged than I thought, but I digress..
Think about it - it's actually genius from the manufacturers view to do this - the object _is_ to hide the vehicle isn't it? It looks a bit better than gobs of black tape and spray paint...save the fender flare, the only clue to it's identity.
VDub - 10 points for the sneakiest spy car yet. Yes, we now have no idea whatsoever what the mk vii might look like so you win.
AE -

AE: 1 point. For letting us know that mk vi is actually a mk vii and driving us to your site with the hopes that we were going to see something new. Meh.
I apologize for double posting. IPad weirdness.
Redalfa is mistaken.
It was a Polo in the TV advert that was dropped from a great height to the ground, not a Golf.
No change there then!!!
I also remember the advert where the Golf was dropped from a great height. On another point 'Latest spy shots reveal a new look.....'. These shots most certainly do not reveal anything about the look of the next gen Golf.
It's as bland as the current one. New Astra (esp. the sports tourer) is way, way better looking. The current Golf estate is almost as ugly as the new Focus estate lol
has all the charm of a shoe box with wheels..
