Radio-controlled cars tested

There’s endless fun at your fingertips with the latest radio-controlled cars – and we pick from 12 of the top thrillers

Radio-controlled cars

Leave the traffic and speed cameras behind and rediscover the thrill of driving with a radio-controlled car. These pocket rockets let you get your speed fix, and guarantee to put a smile on your face whether you’re blasting around an empty car park or skidding across a field.

The latest technology – including lithium polymer (Li-Po) battery packs and brushless motors – means you can have all the benefits of old petrol-powered models with none of the noise, mess or fuss. But which is the top micro machine? We charged up 12 to find out.

How we tested them

We headed to the West London Race Centre in Hillingdon, Middx, to assess our ready-to-run cars. These packages provide instant fun, as everything is in the box, although many can be bought in kit form if you already have your own radio gear and batteries.

Our five-strong test team rated each car based on its fun factor, build quality and value. As British weather is unpredictable, we also wanted our cars to work on wet grass as well as on dry tarmac – so we favoured high ground clearance, 4WD and decent power.

Verdict

A lot has changed since our last test. HPI no longer sells its drifting Mazda, which was Recommended back then, but the Mini Recon has gone one better and claimed top spot. The tiny package is well priced, solidly built and offers hours of fun whether it’s on grass, gravel or tarmac.

Second place goes to the excellent Carrera Fire Truck – we especially like the built-in water cannon. If money’s no object, get the Traxxas Slash 4x4. It rounds out our podium as it’s fun, fast and controllable.

1. HPI Mini Recon

2. Carrera Fire Truck

3. Traxxas Slash 4x4
