Hyundai i30 Estate: 8,002 miles

FINAL REPORT: It’s goodbye to our carrier, and hello hatchback

After nine months on our long-term fleet, it’s time to wave farewell to our Hyundai i30 Estate. But letting go shouldn’t be too hard, as I’ve got another i30 waiting in the wings!

With the company collecting the keys to EX58 KWM, I’ve moved into a hatchback version featuring an updated, greener diesel engine. However, it will have its work cut out living up to its predecessor. Our i30 Estate has been hard to fault since it arrived last September.
Aside from its slightly notchy gearbox, the Hyundai couldn’t be easier to drive.

The light steering ensures it is simple to manoeuvre through city traffic, and the 1.6-litre diesel unit is responsive around town and on the motorway. Even when the car is fully loaded with five people and their luggage, it still has enough power to provide swift and comfortable transport.

Considering the amount of time our car has spent in central London, its fuel consumption of 38.0mpg over the last 8,000 miles is seriously impressive, too. Apart from diesel, my only other expense has been £10.99 for some oil to top up the engine.

The cabin has been equally reliable. The snug driving position is easily adjustable, while the hard-wearing interior trim has stood up well to life on our long-term fleet. And being an estate, it’s been a popular choice with colleagues needing to shift large loads. Only a very small amount of wear on the side of the driver’s seat provides evidence of its tough life.

One thing that has changed is my perception of the brand. Some of my friends were a bit dismissive when I told them I was getting a new Hyundai i30 nine months ago. Typically, they fell into two categories; those who still remembered the firm’s older models, and others who had no idea what I was talking about!

Everyone who’s seen or been in the car since then has been won over, and I’m sure the only reaction I’ll get when I tell them about the new model will be one of envy.

Dawn’s practical estate has always impressed us with its mix of refinement, versatility and strong build. However, what really stands out is the model’s driving experience. With its punchy engine and capable chassis, the Hyundai takes on the leading cars in this class. The best news, though, is reserved for the next owner of our i30. Not only will they be getting a great family holdall, they’ll also have
the balance of its five-year warranty left to enjoy.
