Limited edition Mazda MX-5 100th Anniversary launched

Mazda marks its centenary with the Mazda MX-5 100th Anniversary edition, launched with a contrasting two-tone colour scheme

This is the Mazda MX-5 100th Anniversary edition. It celebrates the Japanese manufacturer’s centenary year, drawing design inspiration from the brand’s first production car, the 1960 Mazda R360 Coupe. Production will be limited to just 100 examples in the UK, with first deliveries set to arrive by autumn this year.

Like the Mazda R360, the MX-5 100th Anniversary features a two-tone, white-and-burgundy colour scheme. The exterior is finished in Snowflake White Pearlescent, while the standard MX-5’s fabric roof, leather upholstery and floor mats have been swapped for burgundy replacements.

A smattering of unique “100th Anniversary” badges also feature throughout the car, appearing on its floor mats, key fob, headrests, wheel centre caps and side skirts. The special logo sets the current Mazda badge inside the original roundel of the Toyo Kogyo cork company, which was restructured in 1927 to launch Mazda’s vehicle manufacturing business.

The MX-5 100th Anniversary edition is powered by Mazda’s 181bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine. The rest of the specification should be identical to the MX-5 Sport Tech model, sharing the same gun-metal grey 17-inch alloy wheels, Bilstein dampers, sports steering wheel and adaptive LED headlights.

Later this year, Mazda will unveil limited edition 100th Anniversary variants of the CX-30 SUV and Mazda 3 hatchback, while special edition versions of the Mazda 6 and CX-5 are being considered for 2021. Pricing and specs for these centenary models will be announced closer to each model’s launch date, although UK production numbers for each car will be limited to just 100 examples.
