New 2023 MG HS facelift unveiled

MG’s flagship SUV has just been given a makeover with a new £23,495 starting price

MG HS facelift - front tracking

2023 is an exciting time for MG, as the firm celebrates its centenary with the new Cyberster roadster. It’s not forgotten its best-selling model, however, and the HS has received a mid-life refresh.

Just like the MG 5 EV’s facelift last year, the HS has had a fairly extensive front-end redesign. There are also two new specifications to choose from, with SE and Trophy replacing the Excite and Exclusive trim levels.

At the front, there’s a whole new bumper with a more aggressive look. This is accompanied by all-new LED headlights and a reshaped, much larger grille. To the rear there’s a fresh bumper design with twin exhaust tips and updated LED lights. The facelifted HS also sits on a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels.

Prices now start from £23,495, meaning the new SE is £60 cheaper than the old Excite model. Standard equipment includes a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, which MG says has been improved with ‘faster and smoother functionality’. Air-conditioning, integrated sat-nav, a rear parking camera with sensors, automatic wipers and keyless entry also feature on this model.

Step up to the Trophy at £25,955 (similarly, £60 cheaper than the old Exclusive) and you’ll get heated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, ambient cabin lighting, tinted windows and an upgraded sound system.

Safety systems such as active emergency braking, pedestrian and bicycle detection, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, rear-traffic alert and blind-spot detection are all standard across the full HS range.

As before, there’s just one engine in the HS - a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit with 160bhp and 250Nm of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, with the option of a seven-speed automatic on either trim level.
