Mitsubishi L200 pick-up gains tech upgrades and 3.5-tonne towing capacity

A 3,500kg towing weight is the highlight in a package of upgrades made to the Mitsubishi L200 for 2018

Mitsubishi has moved to keep pace in the increasingly competitive UK pick-up truck segment by launching a series of choice upgrades to its L200. The modifications see the truck’s maximum towing weight increase to 3.5-tonnes, bringing Mitsubishi’s offering in line with the best tow trucks in the pick-up class. In addition, the latest Mitsubishi touchscreen infotainment system is now available.

The boost in towing capacity has been achieved through extra strengthening to key load-bearing chassis areas on the L200. It enables the Mitsubishi L200 to manage a 3.5-tonne maximum towing weight with a three-axle braked trailer - or 3.1 tones with a one- or two-axle trailer.

Even at its maximum towing weight, the truck can still manage 590kg of cargo in its onboard load bed, more than half of its 1,060kg regular carrying capacity. A new heavy duty tow bar has also been designed for the truck while Trailer Stability Assist software for the L200’s stability control system is now standard.

Of more interest to pick-up customers who don’t plan to tow significant loads will be the new infotainment system that’s now available on the L200. The Smartphone Link Digital Audio system has voice control functionality and live traffic information for the sat-nav, as well as the ability to link with the majority of smartphones. The touchscreen doubles as a display for the reversing camera that should also help when hitching up that trailer.

Mitsubishi will be hoping that the upgrades will help the L200 maintain its position at the top of the pick-up class in the face of stiff competition from high-specification rivals like the Mercedes X-Class and the V6-powered Volkswagen Amarok. It’s priced from £19,000 (+VAT) and available in single cab, Club cab or double cab body styles.
