Skoda may not be the first manufacturer to spring to mind when you think of high-speed runs but that hasn’t stopped the Czech firm from trying to crack the 200mph barrier with an Octavia vRS.

The high-speed run is part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the firm’s high-performance vRS badge and will take place during Bonneville Speed Week in August.

The car itself is factory-fresh but has been lowered by 80mm and gets a new sub-frame which houses a race intercooler. It uses the same 2.0-litre TSI engine but gets a larger turbo and now runs on high-octane race-fuel. Power is up to almost 600bhp – that’s compared with 197bhp in the standard car.

Stringent safety regulations mean the Octavia has been fitted with reinforced roll cage, parachute, fire extinguishers and window cage.

The vRS is entered into the ‘2.0-litre production car’ category and will race over a nine-mile straight, which includes a timed mile in the middle. Performance through that section determines the class winner.

Pretty much a standard Octavia then...

Car is "factory fresh", has a bit of a new subrame, a turbo and an intercooler and it now produces almost 600 bhp. Come on, get real - 2.0 production car... bet there's not a single piece you could swap over onto a genuine production car. What a lot of bo**ocks.

Do the maths.

Stick a 600bhp turbo engine in a wheelbarrow and you'll probably get 200mph at bonneville. No great breakthrough here. Next!
