More than 400,000 drivers have taken the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ test since it appeared 51 years ago. The course sets out to make you a better all-round driver by polishing your hazard perception skills, as well as highlighting how you can make savings on fuel and insurance.
You will need to join your local IAM group before you can start your training, but the first year’s subscription is included in the membership fee. One of the group’s volunteers will assess your driving and prepare you for the test.
An advanced police instructor then takes the exam and will be looking for competent, safe skills on a variety of roads. There’s no grading – just pass or fail – and you may get an insurance discount.
