Budget tyres are a tempting proposition but time and again we’ve discovered that they are a false economy. They may be cheaper, but you get a great deal less performance, and that’s certainly the case with the Tomket. 

In snowy Finland it got off to a decent start, ranking fifth out of eight in the snow braking test, but it was a slippery slope after that. It ranked last in acceleration and around the snow lap too, where it needed to be driven very tentatively. It was much better than the summer tyre, but that’s a very low bar indeed. 

It was last in all five wet tests but especially poor in curved aquaplaning, wet braking and on the wet handling circuit. In the benchmark braking test it took 41.3m to stop, almost 10m more than the best three tyres and a damning 7.1m more than the next worst. Around the wet handling circuit it was almost 10sec off the pace and reacted so randomly that we had to stop the car because it had made us feel sick. 

It was in last place for dry braking too, but on the upside it was okay in dry handling and it returned the lowest rolling resistance, making it the most economical tyre here. But you are trading almost everything for small gains.
