New BMW X3 M: first images and details revealed

A hot version of BMW's new mid-sized X3 SUV is on the way with a six-cylinder twin-turbo engine and 4WD

BMW has confirmed a high-performance X3 M is under development and official teaser images gives us our first look at the Porsche Macan Turbo rival. The German brand has also announced an X4 M is on the way, too.

The third generation X3 slots into a rapidly expanding X-range of BMW SUVs, and the high-performance M version will be the first mid-sized SUV of its type from the German firm.

New 2017 BMW X3 spy shots and info

The X3 M development mule wears heavy masking but our shots, along with the teaser images, hint at an aggressive looking SUV, with sculpted and extended bumpers, plus extended side skirts.

It looks lower and more purposeful than the spy shots we’ve seen of the regular X3. The front bumper is riddled with air inlets, and above the rear window sits a new rear spoiler.

In terms of performance, BMW has confirmed a newly developed twin-turbo six-cylinder engine will power the high-performance SUV. Power figures are yet to be released but we’re expecting upwards of 425bhp. The engines will be paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and BMW's selectable xDrive all-wheel drive system that first appeared on the M5 saloon.

X3 diesel M Performance

Alongside the X3 M, it's likely new diesel powered M Performance X3 could be on the cards. A de-tuned version of the 3.0-litre tri-turbodiesel V6 found in the M50d – the X5’s performance diesel variant – would be the likely powerplant for this car.

Is making a hot version of the X3 a good idea? Let us know your thoughts in the comments…

Steve Walker is completely flummoxed as to why UK drivers can’t get their heads around this simple principle.
