Even with a budget of £25,000, there’s some French flair to go with two of the very best from Britain – and together they’ll be able to cover most people’s automotive needs.
Citroen C4 Cactus - £6,990
We think the original C4 Cactus deserves more love than it gets because it was a real statement of style from Citroen. We’ve gone for the pre-facelift model because Citroen sadly toned down the looks for the updated version. A kerbweight of fractionally more than a tonne means the C4 Cactus is great on fuel and, despite just having 82bhp, it’ll be nippy enough around town. This low-mileage example we found is in the more subtle black paint, although there are plenty of more colourful models to choose from on the Auto Express used car marketplace.

Jaguar XE - £10,994
After the X-Type compact executive, Jaguar took a few years to build a real rival to the usual German suspects with the XE. The most appealing attribute of the XE is the way it drives – it can certainly keep tabs with a BMW 3 Series on a British B-road. The cabin is also a lovely place to be, with an interior that seems to have hardly aged. This ‘Prestige’ trim level also has a sunroof, eight-way adjustable heated front seats and dual-zone climate control.

MINI Cooper S - £6,999
If you’re looking for hot hatch thrills, you can’t do much better than the MINI Cooper S. Being a 2013 model this example comes from two generations ago now, although the retro style still looks incredibly fresh. It’s also done fewer than 60,000 miles and being the special edition ‘Bayswater’ with its unique exterior decals and paint, it’s likely been cherished during its life.
