What is GWM Poer? Complete brand, model and tech guide for UK car buyers

New pick-up truck entrant has got the (pricing) power

GWM Poer - POER300

Poer wants to shake up the pick-up market with the classic formula for a new entrant. big vehicle at (relatively) small price. Enter the Poer300, an old-school, ladder-frame pick-up running a gutsy diesel engine. The truck brand from Great Wall Motors (GWM), Poer is pronounced ‘power’ and – sound the lost-in-translation alarm – supposedly stands for ‘Powerful, Off-road, Enjoyable and Reliable’. It’s a bit too soon to tell on the latter, given that the Poer300 only launched in the UK in September.

It’s fine to drive and competitive on spec; the £31,495 Lux is the cheapest pick-up around, yet features wireless phone charging, park assist and lots of ADAS features. And the mid-spec Ultra cleverly tackles that perennial ‘clambering into the load bay-challenge’ with a step folding out from the tailgate. At 5.4 metres long, it’s absolutely huge, with a 1,050kg payload.

GWM importer IM says it’s targeting farmers and builders, in the hope of shifting 1,000 a year. But lifestyle pick-up sales are a pipe dream now that double-cabs incur company-car tax: puffing out 221g/km of CO2 places the 300 in the top tax bracket. Ouch.

It’s not the first Chinese pick-up: GWM took that honour in 2012 with the Winglet 5, which was called the Steed over here. Funny that.

UK models:Just the one pick-up
Our pick:Erm, the Poer300
How big in China?Part of Great Wall Motors, which has made 1.23 million vehicles
2024 global exports:453,141 (37 per cent of total sales)
2025 UK registrations:25
Retailer network and warranty:47 GWM dealers/service centres; five-year/125,000-mile warranty
We say:Poer will always be a niche maker, but it boosts choice in the pick-up truck market and keeps price pressure on rivals
