New Ford Ranger PHEV set to join pick-up’s range

The Ford Ranger pick-up will get a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time, but it won’t arrive until 2025

The Ford Ranger is our favourite pick-up truck at the minute - and it’s also the UK’s best seller, but Ford will broaden the Ranger’s appeal in the coming years by introducing a plug-in hybrid version.

While we have a full set of images of the new Ranger Plug-in hybrid, Ford hasn’t confirmed final specifications for the truck. That’s because the PHEV model isn’t due to hit the road until 2025, so plenty of testing will take place in the meantime.

On the outside the Ranger PHEV looks identical to the standard model, apart from an additional flap for the charging port situated next to the fuel filler cap, plus a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels.

Powering the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will be a 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine, combined with an electric motor and rechargeable battery. Ford hasn’t disclosed details of the plug-in hybrid system, although it’s said to be targeting a WLTP-rated all-electric range of more than 28 miles.

The combination of the petrol unit and electric powertrain will ensure the Ranger PHEV will be the torquiest Ranger you can buy, although maximum towing capacity is targeted at 3,500kg - which is the same as the diesel Ranger.

The plug-in hybrid system will enable Ford to add its ‘Pro Power Onboard’ system to the Ranger. This allows for vehicle-to-load charging of power tools and appliances. Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe says, “with Pro Power Onboard for the first time, Ranger owners can power their work sites and campsites easily.”

Given the potential of electric-only running, we expect tweaks to the Ranger’s infotainment system. On the previous Transit Custom PHEV, there was an energy flow display and the range in the driver’s trip computer would show EV range as an extra figure next to the petrol engine’s range. But since the Ranger has the latest SYNC4 infotainment system, expect more in-depth information this time around.
