Polestar Synergy Design Concept wins Hot Wheels design competition

Swedish EV brand Polestar is on the cusp of debuting a GT and open-top sports car, might a supercar be next?

Polestar has revealed the winning entry from its Hot Wheels Design Competition, with a full-scale model of the striking Synergy exhibited at the IAA motor show in Munich. The winning Synergy concept combined three different entries from the 600 that were submitted overall, and over the last six months it has been constructed at full scale.

As well as channelling Polestar’s own design language, the concept was created with the Hot Wheels mentality in mind. Over its 55-year history the toy car brand has been famous for its own extravagant designs, as well as the accurate recreation of well-known road-going cars in tiny 1/64th scale.

The competition was initially whittled down to 10 finalists, with the judging panel landing on two exterior, and one interior design, that would all be combined into this final model. The result is a striking and unusual single-seater supercar that appears to combine road-going and competition car elements, with Polestar’s distinctive aesthetic language.

Despite purely being a show car, realistic packaging constraints were taken into account, with room for electric motors and a realistically proportioned battery pack within the 1,040mm tall and 4,560mm long body. The winning pair of design students are both based in Paris, and were praised for their use of ‘hollowed out volumes’ and ‘biomimicry’, particularly in the concept’s nose.

While not destined to foreshadow any production model, the Synergy could well reveal new design details that might be integrated into future designs. Polestar CEO Thomas Englath commented: “Congratulations to the winners; their vision and the teamwork with our designers has resulted in a truly gorgeous car. The collaboration with Mattel for next year’s Polestar Design Contest and the forthcoming scale models of our production cars will bring the Polestar brand and this groundbreaking competition to an even wider audience. All of this proves that electric vehicles – in reality or as toys – can be just as, if not more, exciting than their ICE equivalents.”

So while this might not be the first inkling of a potential Polestar supercar, there is very real potential for the Polestar Synergy to go into mass production in a form that we could all reasonably afford. It’ll just be 1/64th of the size.
