New 2019 Porsche 911 Cabriolet joins range

The Porsche 911 Cabriolet gets the coupe’s latest tech and styling, while a new twin-turbo engine and gearbox feature

Having revealed the all-new Porsche 911  at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November 2018, the German manufacturer has lifted the lid on the convertible variant of the latest 992 generation of the iconic sports car at Geneva.

Sticking with the soft-top set-up the convertible has featured since its debut in 1982, the fully-automatic roof includes an integrated glass rear window and magnesium bows to prevent the hood from ‘ballooning’ at high speed.

The soft-top can be stowed in as little as 12 seconds and at speeds of up to 31mph, while a wind deflector has also been added to improve passenger comfort during top-down driving.

All of the latest tech and visual changes that were first seen on the 992 coupe last year are carried over to the convertible. The car itself is 45mm wider than the outgoing drop-top and rides on 20-inch wheels at the front and wider and larger 21-inch rims at the back for a more aggressive stance.

New Matrix LED headlamps at the front and a full-length rear LED light strip are the biggest visual identifiers that this is the latest 992-generation car. It carries over the new cabin design, dominated by the 10.9-inch colour display on the dash, plus an analogue rev counter that is flanked by two smaller digital readouts behind the steering wheel.

As with the coupe, the soft-top will be launched exclusively as a rear-wheel-drive Carrera S and four-wheel-drive Carrera 4S. Both versions use a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six producing 444bhp and 530Nm of torque, which is paired with a fresh eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox as standard.

Porsche says the power hike over the outgoing model has been achieved thanks to a new layout for the turbos and an improved air-cooling system.

The German firm claims the Carrera S Cabriolet has a 0-62mph time 0.2 seconds slower than the coupe, at 3.9 seconds, and a top speed of 190mph. The Carrera 4S covers the benchmark sprint in 3.8 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds down over the hard-top equivalent, but has a slightly lower top speed of 186mph.

Prices for the soft-top start at £102,755 and rise to £108,063 for the Carrera 4S, a £9,645 premium over the coupe version.
