Vredestein Wintrac Pro+ review

There’s a good feel in the wet, but a mixed set of results sees the Vredestein pegged back to a mid-field finish.

Vredestein’s winter tyre seems to have stood still while others have improved. High spots were few and a number of lows restricted it to a mid-field finish. It started well in the snow, claiming second best in braking, but it was no better than sixth in the traction test and slipped to eighth on the handling circuit where it was very loose at the rear end, making it hard to balance and make progress.

Its performances in the wet were also mixed, from a very close second in wet cornering to a distant seventh in the crucial wet braking test. Its aquaplaning performances were average too. It earned a solid fifth on the wet handling circuit, only 1.2 seconds off the pace, where it was one of the best for feel: positive, exploitable and grippy.

In contrast, it recorded last places in both dry handling and dry braking, although it was only a metre off the best in braking. It was notably off the pace around the dry circuit, needing gentle handling and lots of coaxing to find the lines. As in the snow, it lacked  the positivity of the competition. Mid-field results in both refinement and economy completed a patchy performance overall.
