New Volkswagen Golf Black Edition on sale from £31,985

The VW Golf Black Edition comes with some bespoke design tweaks and the option of hybrid power

The facelifted eighth-generation Golf is almost here but before it arrives Volkswagen will launch a new trim level of the current car - named the Black Edition. It’s not the first time we’ve seen the Black Edition name on a Volkswagen in recent times. The Tiguan and Touraeg also received the trim level, just before their respective facelifts.

The Golf Black Edition is on sale now and sits between the R-Line and GTE in terms of price. Based on the R-Line the Black Edition gets that car’s sportier exterior bodywork and sport seats up front.

In addition to the R-Line spec it features 18-inch ‘Bergamo’ Black alloy wheels, ambient interior lighting, an LED headlight strip across the grille, black wing mirror caps, heated windscreen washer jets, LED rear lights cornering lights, heated front seats and a rear view camera.

Three powertrains are offered with the Golf Black Edition. Kicking things off is the £31,985 1.5-litre TSI petrol with 148bhp and a six-speed manual (pricing for other Black Edition models hasn’t been revealed yet). Above this is the 1.5-litre eTSI mild-hybrid with a seven-speed automatic DSG and again with 148bhp.

The Black Edition also has a bespoke powertrain within the Golf range. It’s 2.0-litre petrol with 188bhp mated to a seven-speed DSG with power going to VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

Like the rest of the Golf range, the Black Edition has other features including a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, road sign display and keyless go.

The Golf has plenty of rivals! These are the best hatchbacks you can buy....
