It used to be easier to define an executive car. It was big, usually German, and if it wasn’t a BMW or Mercedes it was probably a Jaguar. Things are a bit different now though, and while saloon cars still dominate the executive car segment, there’s a fascinating range of options.
Of course you can still follow the traditional route and pick a BMW 5 Series, but if you want to downsize then options like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Jaguar XE are extremely rewarding choices. Want something smaller still? You could even try a saloon version of an upmarket hatchback - the Audi A3 Saloon or Mercedes CLA spring to mind.
Think saloon cars are too old-fashioned? Then the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A5 Sportback offer a swoopier, sportier sense of style. Not forgetting Lexus, Mazda, Volvo and Infiniti which are all brands throwing an increasing variety of new models into the executive car ring as they turn up the heat on the establishment.
Luckily, Auto Express is here to help you wade through the options. Our road test team gives authoritative verdicts on every new executive model as it comes to market, and we’re we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 executive cars that we think are most interesting right now.
