Overall Average Rating: 87.5%
Position in the Top 100 cars: 21st

No change here – last year the 3-Series also came in at 21. Yet a few scores jump out for the wrong reasons. Its poor ride rating is caused by the sporty suspension, while the lack of practicality is down to the tight boot and optional folding rear seats.

Running costs fail to impress: 46th is little better than average. Is good economy ruined by high servicing costs?

Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 8th)

It trails Lexus, but BMW will be delighted to see that it’s still ahead of Mercedes and Audi… just. The brand has fallen two places overall this year, and will look to reverse that trend in 2010.

Overall a good car that is often underated. Care is very economical, fast enough, has good handling and a grat please to drive.
The most niggling point is the rear wash wipe. The filler cap is positioned in a stupid place that get blocked with dirt and the cap often pops open. This means that debris falls into the tube, leading to blockages and the washer not working. Also would have expedted rear wiper to automatically come on when reverse selected & main wipers are on. This was a useful feature I had on a very much older Rover 400 that I used to have.
Also the various levers make seat adjustment awkward and jerky.

The BMW 3series compact is still a beautiful piece of design even for a 15year old car, it doesnt give me any unusual problems even with 122,000 on the clock. It still feels compitant on the road and eats up the miles on my regular commute from london to manchester. There are a few little things going wrong, the door panels tend to pop up by the window and some of the interior lining is comming away (old glue) but its not noicable. The engine still revs smoothly and give a little thrill, the odd fast roundabout still brings a smile and surpirse!

A great car for long journeys, comfortable and quiet on the motorway. Good balance of fuel economy and performance. The SE ride is a bit soft for faster driving on A and B roads, but this has improved with the fitting of larger wheels with lower profile tyres. I love BMWs and the main dealer customer care is excellent. The only thing I don't like is the lack of traction in the snow due to rear wheel drive. I had to walk 4 miles to work because I could not get the car of the drive during the heavy snow this year!

Great performance and fuel economy from a 3.0 litre diesel, but not sure I would buy another diesel again.

The car handles very well, but the ride can be very harsh and stiff at times, finding every pot hole and rut in the road, making journeys quite tiresome at times.

I've received very average service from two different BMW dealers - not what I would expect from a Prestige manufacturer. The service I received has been so bad it has made me seriously wonder about purchasing another BMW in the future.

This model is of the green efficiency type, stop/start, battery regeneration etc. With a 2 litre engine and 143 bhp I can get well over 40mpg from it. Useful information given to enable driving style which is most economical. It is a BMW so it handles beautifully and servicing costs work out very reasonable due to condition based servicing which has meant 2 years of motoring at a cost of £120 at an independant BMW authorised garage.

The 320d Touring is an excellent balance between low emissions, performance and handling. Running costs are low with the first service at 21,000miles - remarkable. No other manufacturer can match the drive train and performance per litre of engine size - for fuel consumption, power, torque or emissions. Practicality is good but not best in class. Poor in snow and ice conditions. Excellent build quality.

Many disappointments for spending £8k more on the replacement for previous BMW 330ci Sport I had. It did 90k miles in 5yr with ONE failure... a wiper relay. This 335ci has been in the dealer more time in past 6 months that previous one in 5 years!!!
This one is so much better handling now that I finally changed OEM Run Flat Bridgestone tyres for Goodyear Eagle F1 NON RFT's

My wife filled the vehicle up with petrol rather than diesel on Dec 19th 09. I stall have not had the vehicle back as of Jan 15th 10. The bill initially was £5800! The work was completed only to find it wouldn't start, the bill now stands at £6800 after they decided it needed a new ECU (why??). It's totally overpriced and unreasonable. Great car, stupid money!

You do list my car exactly its an Alpina D3, wish they would revert to a oil dip stick!!!! and it even had falt code on arrival!!

BMW 353d was previous car sold after one month handling was alien in fast bends - as if car was not inmy control.

Also got rid of best car I have ever owned 530d 2000, and that includes a " lotus super 7 " 1966.

My car (1997 BMW 328i) is the perfect compromise of performance and practicality. It's just big enough for a weekend away for the three of us. For my tastes it has enough performance and reasonable economy, I do intend to upgrade next year but my car has served me well for 5 years with only very minor faults which I've mostly fixed myself.

Considering the 330d A is a family car, the performance and echonomy is amazing, run flat tyres are expensive although probably the only cost along with fuel & insurance a BMW owner has to budget for against running costs, for five years, this is my eighth bmw and second 330d, the steptronic version is far superior to the manual version,

Effortlessly easy car to drive. Mine is the convertible and you can feel the additional weight in the car and at the pumps BUT the drive is excellent. Moreover, when you have the roof down it just rouds the whole thing off. Wonderful car but needs decent engine to make reasonable progress.
Would have another one in a heartbeat.

I am very happy with my car. When I chose my car, 3 of the most important things for me were performance, fuel consumption and emissions, no other car manufacturer could match BMW on these. I think its the best all round car thats on the market just now and will take something special to beat it.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
07-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Overall my car is very confortable, a good drivers car, the only drawback that I have found are the run flat tyres, which are absolutely useless in snowy weather, no grip. Ithink that BMW should give you the option of purchasing rub flats or normal tyres when you buy from new.

The 3 series Cabriolet is a nice car, but not as sporty as it looks with a needless hard ride for the performance output. Previous marques I have owned are Mercs, Porsches and Alfas which are far more stylish with more sole than the ultimate bavarian driving machine.

Disappointed in the performance of the car, as well as the smoothness of the engine.
Don't think the handling is as good as my MK5 Golf GTi was, and driver comfort isn't great either.
Wouldn't but a 4-cylinder BMW again - should have stretched to a straight 6 !

Fantastic machine, incredible build quality and performance. Servicing can be pricey and running any 3.0L petrol engine is going to have its costs. For what it does thought well worth it.

would buy again, with warranty there can't be an issue!

It is the first coupe I have owned and it is brilliant. The ride is firm as it has the M Sport setup and access to the rear seats can be a little difficult, but it drives like a dream. It is fast and agile and has a classy understated style.

It is a very well built and designed. Its handling and ride is very good putting confidence in the driver, me! It is elegant and well equipped, i would buy the same model again but next time i'm seeking a different style of car for a change.

The car is a 318iSE and it perfoms virtually every function i could want of a car. The only things i would change about my car are the addition of bluetooth functionality, through-loading facility and change to a six cylinder engine model.

Diesel spoils handling.
Suspension arm bush wear and exhaust system problems frequency unacceptable. Electrical system problems never approached with confidence. Parts/labour overpriced.
I only like rear-wheel drive so not much choice.

Solid and safe car. It gives the performance when you ask of it, but is very economical, doing 50mpg - I've tested it! From a 3 litre sports car, I haven't yet found another car to match it. Very pleased with this car.

SUPERB TO DRIVE ! AS IT IS AN M-TECH SPORT MODEL IT DRIVES VERY SMOOTHLY ON GERMAN ROADS BUT NOT REALLY SUITED TO THE POORLY MADE & MAINTAINED BRITISH ROADS. ONLY REAR WHEEL DRIVE CAN GIVE HANDLING AS PRECISE AS THIS.

Its a classic shape E36 BMW 328 Coupe. Nothing I've seen replaces it yet, in terms of looks or all round drivability. I'm probably waiting for BMW to thoroughly "de-Bangle" the 3 series and then I'll replace it.
