Mercedes G55 AMG

Not many car makers would slip a 469bhp supercharged V8 into a 25-year-old off-roader. But to celebrate the G-Wagen's silver anniversary, Mercedes did exactly that, creating the world's most powerful 4x4.

Although the basic design is now 25 years old, this latest G-Wagen is more attractive than ever. Performance versions have become a fashion accessory among well-heeled buyers, and the G55 AMG Kompressor is surely the ultimate status symbol. While the car makes no practical sense on paper, all that power and noise are terrific fun.

Not many car makers would slip a 469bhp supercharged V8 into a 25-year-old off-roader. But to celebrate the G-Wagen's silver anniversary, Mercedes did exactly that, creating the world's most powerful 4x4.

The most conspicuous aspect of the G55 AMG Kompressor is the noise from its twin side exhausts, which emit anything from a burble to a roar. The newcomer looks the part as well, thanks to wheelarch extensions and side skirts.

Unleash the power and the SL55-sourced 5.4-litre engine propels the off-roader forward with extreme force. However, permanent four-wheel drive ensures good traction and, surprisingly, the steering is weighty and authoritative.

Shifts through the five-speed automatic box are seamless, and while there is some slack in the pedal response, that's a bonus off-road, if you're happy to risk scratching those wheels.
In certain respects, however, the car shows its age. The ride is harsh and, as Mercedes' engineers can do nothing about the aerodynamics, wind noise is intrusive at motorway speeds. Forward visibility is excellent, though, with the indicators positioned as useful guides for placing the car in corners.

The G55 AMG has bags of character and, crucially, feels built to last for a million miles. However, only a handful are available in the UK, as Mercedes isn't officially importing the car. If you've just re-released your greatest hits or sold a million rap discs and would like to be seen in the ultimate butch status symbol, you might want to track one down.
