  • Step 1

    <span>Chaning the belt and tensioner: The Britpart HP fuel pump drive belt kit (part number 1324390) fitted here, comprises the new belt, new tensioner and a new bolt.</span>

  • Step 2

    The quickest approach for this job is by laying over the engine after removing a few parts that obstruct the reach to the drive belt (location arrowed).

  • Step 3

    <span>Closer in, battery’s removed and EGR coolant pipe (silver) and engine harness are released and moved aside. (Top of belt casing just visible, arrowed.)</span>

  • Step 4

    <span>From here on, working from the engine bay relies on skill, practice, mirrors and feel. So here’s a vehicle with the body off, to show what happens.</span>

  • Step 5

    <span>Looking from the rear, we can clearly see the drive belt and pulleys at the back of the engine after unclipping the belt casing’s cover.</span>

  • Step 6

    <span>As in our earlier diagram, the camshaft pulley is on the left here, tensioner pulley in the centre, and fuel pump pulley on the right.</span>

  • Step 7

    <span>A 10mm socket and wrench can be slid down the back of the engine to release the tensioner’s fixing bolt in the normal thread direction.</span>

  • Step 8

    <span>If working from the front of the engine, final removal of the tensioner pulley and its bolt needs a steady hand, but is easy with body off.</span>

  • step 9

    <span>The old drive belt can then be eased off over the two remaining pulleys and withdrawn into the engine bay to be discarded after removal.</span>

  • Step 10

    <span>The new belt is fitted over the pulleys, noting any direction arrows. The pulleys turn anti-clockwise as seen from the rear of the engine.</span>

  • Step 11

    <span>Backplate of the tensioner pulley (left) has a tongue which engages into the back of the pulley casing. Pin on front (right) locks spring until fully fitted</span>

  • Step 12

    <span>Tensioner pulley is installed, ensuring the tongue at the back of the tensioner engages in the recess in the casing seen here behind the pulleys.</span>

  • Step 13

    <span>The tensioner pulley’s new bolt is tightened to the specified torque (currently 25Nm). Note, its locking pin stays in during installation.</span>

  • Step 14

    <span>After checking the belt is aligned and seated on the pulleys, the securing pin can be removed, allowing the pulley to apply tension to the belt.</span>

  • Step 15

    <span>Refit parts if working over the engine and replenish coolant if EGR coolant pipe was disconnected. Or, as in our case here, refit the body.</span>
