While the new Mégane range isn’t as daring as the previous generation, the estate is more graceful than before. Interior quality and space are much improved, while there is something for everyone in the extensive engine line-up. Prices start at £15,485, so the Renault undercuts base Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra estates by £300-plus – even though it offers better equipment.

The reinvention of Renault is almost complete. The Mégane Sport Tourer will be the 10th new model to emerge this year, and the fifth Mégane – the family already comprises hatch, Coupé, Grand Scenic and Scenic variants.

While some estates can compromise a car’s styling with a longer roofline and upright rear screen, the Sport Tourer is a good-looking extension of the five-door’s elongated silhouette. Highlights include C-shaped tail-lamps, which sit proud of the boot surface, adding a three-dimensional look to the rear.

The wheelbase has grown to 2,702mm – that’s 62mm longer than the hatch – which not only gives more composed handling, but also extra cabin space. Boot capacity ranges from 524 litres with the rear seats in place to 1,600 litres when they’re folded – either way, a 30 per cent rise.

As with other Méganes, the driving experience is short on thrills, but Renault has balanced ride comfort and body control well. There’s enough steering feel to keep you interested, while the noise insulation is excellent for a car in this class.

Our flagship dCi 160 diesel packs surprising punch. A huge 380Nm of torque gives the car superb cruising ability – sixth is the only gear you’ll need for travelling between 50mph and 70mph on the motorway. Three other oil-burners offer between 105bhp and 128bhp, and all emit less than 135g/km. The five petrol options include 128bhp 1.4 and 178bhp 2.0-litre versions of the TCe units.
