Think VW and it'll be the Polo or Golf that spring to mind, but at the bottom of the German firm's range is a solid and dependable all-rounder that's worth a look – the Fox.
Compared to newer VWs, the Brazillian-built city car may not be the most stylish model in the line-up, but it's a handy urban runabout with ample seating for four and a solid, if uninspiring driving experience.
There's no need to spend much either – the basic 1.2-litre 3dr model costs £6,740 and represents the Fox at its best. Don't expect to go anywhere very quickly – 0-60mph takes 17 seconds – but you should get 45mpg without really trying while the handling and ride are both tidy.Â
It's a shame that CO2 emissions are high at 144g/km but servicing should be cheap and infrequent while come resale time, the Fox will reward with thanks to traditionally strong VW residual values.
