Audi unveils new Q7 e-tron TFSI and A6 L e-tron for Shanghai

Audi's latest Q7 SUV gets petrol plug-in hybrid option for China, and A6 LWB e-tron heading to Shanghai show

Audi Q7 petrol hybrid

Audi is looking to take the upcoming Shanghai Motor Show by storm with the unveiling of not one but three new models. As well as the sleek, 724bhp hybrid Prologue Allroad concept car, there will be a new four-cylinder petrol Q7 and an A6-L e-tron.

We've no doubt all eyes will be glued to the Prologue once again thanks not only to its looks but that astonishing petrol-electric hybrid producing 724bhp and claiming 117mpg economy. But a production model is a long way off, so the latest e-tron variants should be of equal interest as they should be on the roads soon.

The second-generation Q7 large SUV has only recently entered the scene but Audi is already adding new engines to its line up in the form of the TFSI e-tron, a four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor to produce 210bhp and 350Nm of torque.

Developed especially for Asian markets, the powertrain features a disc-shaped electric motor that on its own produces 91kW of power and 220Nm of torque. Integrated to the eight-speed tiptronic autobox, it sends power to the front wheels most of the time and makes the Q7 capable of 0-62mph in less than six seconds, with a 33-mile all-electric range.

It also claims almost 113mpg but as is the norm with modern hybrids, a real-world figure will probably be some way off that. It's also only set for China, Singapore and Japan at the moment, with the UK receiving V6 diesel and petrol e-tron hybrids for the Q7.

Alongside the SUV hybrid is the long-wheelbase Audi A6 which also debuts the same powertrain. Like the standard A6 L, which isn't offered in the UK, the e-tron won't come to our shores any time soon and is aimed squarely at Asia.
