Best MPVs for Motability

While there are loads of superminis and city cars on offer to Motability scheme members, you are slightly more restricted if you want an MPV and still have a nil advance payment deal.

While there are loads of superminis and city cars on offer to Motability scheme members, you are slightly more restricted if you want an MPV and still have a nil advance payment deal.

Despite this, there are still some great MPV choices on Motability, including seven-seat options like the the SEAT Alhambra and Ford S-MAX. So for ultimate access and practicality, check out our pick of the Best Motability MPVs.

Citroen C4 SpaceTourer/Grand C4 SpaceTourer

Citroen C4 SpaceTourer

We really like the Citroen C4 SpaceTourer, in fact we awarded it the full five stars in our in depth review. The styling of the SpaceTourer proves that not all MPVs conform to the stereotypical boxy shape yet the design isn’t too outlandish and shouldn’t put many people off.

There is also a seven-seat option, the Grand C4 SpaceTourer if you needed extra boot or passenger space. Not that this should be an issue in the standard SpaceTourer. No other MPV has the same comfort levels and practical touches such as a large bin under the centre console, drawers under the front seats, deep door bins and lots of cup-holders.

Being a Citroen, the SpaceTourer is very comfortable to drive and the entry-level 128bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine is actually one of the best out of the range despite its small size. It is quiet around town yet punchy enough to make overtaking easy.

Ford C-Max/Grand C-Max

Ford C-MAX - front cornering

The Ford C-Max may not be as practical or as stylish as the Citroen but it is certainly not a model to be overlooked.  It has an impressive 471 litres of boot space and can easily carry 5 adults, although longer journeys may be a little uncomfortable for rear seat passengers.

Interior storage is good, thanks to a versatile centre console, with its deep cubby, plus a decent sized glovebox. The roomy door bins are also useful, as is the 12V socket in the rear. You even get a fold-out observation mirror below the rear-view mirror to keep an eye on kids in the back.

Ford’s Active Park Assist, which automatically parallel parks the car is an option that makes parking a lot easier while another handy option is the Family Pack, which comes with a powered tailgate and rear sunblinds.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer/ Gran Tourer

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer 225xe white

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is BMW’s first attempt at a MPV.  The Active Tourer favours quality over practically which means it may not have the same space as the other two MPVs here but it brings a more premium and upmarket feel to the sector.

Up front there are numerous storage bins and a handy armrest that doubles up as storage to charge your phone. There’s also a huge amount of adjustment in the driving position so a driver of any size or disability should be able to get comfortable behind the wheel. However It only seats five people but the centre rear seat is not really suitable for adults. If you are looking for more space,  BMW offers a seven-seat version called the Gran Tourer.

The entry-model is the 218i petrol. It uses the three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine from the MINI Cooper and solves the refinement issues that plague the 2.0 diesel. It's hushed at start up and well isolated from the cabin at speed, managing 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds.
