Multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) might not be as plentiful as hatchbacks or SUVs on the Motability scheme, but these people carriers are a great option if you need lots of space, family-friendly features and value for money.

Due to their boxy shape, MPVs are ideal if you regularly carry bulky cargo or need accessibility conversions to meet your specific requirements, such as Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles. 

You currently can’t find any MPVs with nil advance payment, but there are some really good options if you’re able to spend a little bit of money.

Thanks to advances in technology, many modern MPVs, even the van-based ones, are far better to drive and much more luxurious to sit in than their predecessors.

Dacia Jogger

Most of the MPVs and people carriers available via Motability require a chunky advanced payment, but the budget-friendly Dacia Jogger is reasonably affordable at just £295.

Dacia has become known as providing value for money, and that’s exactly what the Jogger offers. While it isn’t the largest car on this list, it has a huge amount of cabin space and a generous selection of on-board tech, especially in this top-spec Extreme trim. Running costs are also on the low side. 

While the Jogger is a seven-seater car, space in the third row is quite tight and best suited for children or short journeys for adults. The third row of seats do fold flat so when you aren’t carrying people, there’s plenty of space for luggage.

Kia PV5

It’s fair to say that most MPVs are lacking in the style department, although that’s far from the case with the new Kia PV5.

If you thought the PV5 was a one-trick pony though, you might be pleasantly surprised to hear that it’s an incredibly capable MPV, too. The boot is very roomy with an astonishing 1,310 litres worth of boot space, it has great all-round visibility, feels composed on the move, and has plenty of on-board tech.

Being a fully-electric car, the PV5 Long Range can go up to 256 miles on a single charge, according to Kia. We’ve only driven the Standard Range car with a claimed 183-mile range, we managed to achieve 3.3mi/kWh and a real-world range of around 170 miles on our tests - which is pretty good.

Citroen Berlingo/Peugeot Rifter

If you want plenty of space and low running costs, the Citroen Berlingo or Peugeot Rifter could be just the ticket.

There are very few differences between the two cars, including the weekly cost and advance payments, so whichever make or model you choose they all offer the same key qualities. 

There’s up to 213 miles of battery range in the electric version, or an efficient diesel engine which can return over 51mpg so shouldn’t break the bank when it comes to running costs. Whatsmore, there’s acres of interior space and the option of five or seven seats, and both vans are suitable for wheelchair accessibility conversion, too.

Volkswagen Caddy Maxi

If you cover lots of miles every year, chances are you’ll have a diesel car near the top of your shopping list. If that’s the case then the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi could be an ideal candidate.

The Caddy Maxi is a very spacious family car that’s powered by VW’s highly acclaimed TDI engine. Most diesel MPVs available on Motability require an advanced payment of over £4,000, but with the Caddy Maxi you’ll get enough plush materials and kit to help hide this car’s roots in a small van. 

The Assistance Pack on this model adds front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and even a reverse parking aid which gives the car the ability to reverse into a parking space for you.

If you don’t need a diesel but like the sound of the Caddy Maxi, it is also available with a petrol engine and a lower advanced payment starting from £3,499.

Ford Tourneo Connect

If the Ford Tourneo Connect looks familiar, that’s because it’s based on the Ford Transit Connect. But that’s not all, these models also share some DNA with the Volkswagen Caddy. 

The result is a spacious car that feels very durable  — although this does mean it can’t really be described as luxurious. The EcoBoost petrol engine is economical to run, though, and you’ll be able to carry plenty of cargo and passengers with room to spare.
