Three-car garage: Honda Jazz, CR-V and HR-V Nismo for the price of a brand-new Civic
A brand-new Civic will cost you at least £35,000, or you could have this three-Honda garage for very similar money…

With a smooth hybrid powertrain and a classy cabin, we like the latest Honda Civic here at Auto Express - although at £35,000 it’s on the expensive side for a family hatchback. If you’re indoctrinated into the Honda brand, then there’s good news because you can get the family-friendly CR-V SUV, the surprisingly spacious Jazz supermini and the hybrid HR-V all for the same price as that new Civic.
Honda HR-V Mk2 - £11,750

The original HR-V was a bit of a wacky thing, being offered in a three-door bodystyle. But the second-generation model that arrived in 2013 was much more contemporary with a design that aped the Civic of the time. This one we’ve found comes with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a manual ‘box that has a typically lovely Honda gearshift. This mid-range SE model also has an uprated hi-fi, dual-zone climate control, power-fold mirrors, all-round parking sensors and some extra driver-assistance systems.

Honda Jazz Mk4 - £12,707

There’s a lot to like about the current Honda Jazz - although given its high new list price, used alternatives like this EX hybrid model we’ve found make more sense. This example is only five years old and has covered 70,000 miles, but we wouldn’t worry, because the Jazz scores highly for reliability in our Driver Power survey. It might not be the most fun supermini to drive, but with light steering and great all-round visibility the Jazz is super-easy when getting around town – and we can’t forget those wonderfully innovative folding ‘magic’ rear seats that boost the car’s practicality so much.

Honda CR-V Mk4 - £9,780

If you’re after a well built, classy and refined family SUV, then the CR-V is a great choice. The fourth-generation model we’ve found here features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an automatic gearbox. It won’t set your pulse racing with its 12.3-second 0-62mph time, but it’s decently economical with a 37.7mpg combined figure. Like the other Hondas we’ve featured here, the CR-V should prove to be reliable, and being a mid-size SUV there’s plenty of space inside – including a rather impressive 589-litre boot.
