Ford unveils in-car escape room game concept

Ford showcases an escape room-style game built into a Mustang Mach E to help owners get accustomed to its controls

Ford

Ford has revealed a concept for an in-car escape-room style game, which it says could help drivers familiarise themselves with their car’s controls.

A video released by the manufacturer shows a Mustang Mach E presenting its occupants with a ‘spy game’ that takes those inside the car on a ‘secret mission.’ The challenge begins with a word puzzle, after which they’re instructed to drive to a location. Various pieces of equipment in the car such as the speaker system, the electric seats, power tailgate air conditioning and headlights are used as part of the interactive game, though only while the car is static.

The game itself is installed on an iOS device and works via the car’s Apple CarPlay system. Ford says the idea is purely a working concept at the moment, but claims that it could offer a glimpse into the future of apps that could entertain or educate drivers who are waiting at an EV charging station or even riding in an autonomous vehicle.

Carsten Starke, a technical expert at Ford of Europe, commented: “This is a bit of fun that has a serious side, as it shows just what could be possible with the technology we have in cars today.

“Having the ability to create interaction between vehicle and driver could open up new ways to explore other possibilities in the future, like an interactive owner’s manual or even driver coaching.”

The topic of gaming in cars made the news recently when Tesla had to remove the ability for drivers to play games on their infotainment screens while on the move.
