The £25,000 to £35,000 bracket will see you get behind the wheel of a seven-seat Skoda Kodiaq SUV, a funky-looking Hyundai Tucson, or the ridiculously cheap to run Renault Zoe. There are plenty of family cars available at this price, but we've found a wide selection of cars that drive well, look good and will be economical to run.

Skoda Kodiaq 1.5 TSI 150 SE Drive 7st

If you need a big family car with seven seats, then the Kodiaq is one of the best mid-budget options.  It’s not the most spacious seven-seater around – MPVs and van-based people carriers do a much better job of carrying passengers in comfort – but most buyers prefer the style delivered by SUVs. And as an SUV, the Kodiaq nails its brief. It’s comfortable for all passengers – as long as you accept that the sixth and seventh seats are best for kids – while there’s plenty of storage, the boot is big with the rearmost seats folded and it’s well equipped. 

The punchy 1.5-litre petrol engine is cheap to run, plus it’s quiet and smooth, while the Kodiaq is even quite fun to drive. The Skoda is mainly set up for refinement, while it comes with a lengthy kit list that includes 18-inch alloys, cruise control, navigation, a rear-view camera and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

MG ZS EV 51kWh SE

The MG ZS EV is the brand’s most convincing model to date, thanks to an excellent powertrain that transforms the ZS from also-ran to among the class leaders. It’s a fantastic company car option thanks to the ultra-low tax bills, but it’s great for many other reasons, too.

For a start, it’s comfortable and easy to drive. The all-electric set-up offers plenty of power from low speeds, as well as near-silent running and ultra-low costs. It’s relaxing yet delivers sprightly performance, and there’s a decent amount of space inside. The 470-litre boot is very generous, especially given the ZS EV’s fairly compact footprint.

There are two versions available, SE and Trophy. Unless you really need the heated faux leather seats and wireless phone charging of the latter, SE should provide all the kit you’re after. You get LED lights, sat nav, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start, phone connectivity and a 360-degree parking camera.

Renault Zoe R135 100kW Rapid Charge GT Line+

There are plenty of electric cars to choose from at this price level, and we reckon they make the best company cars at the moment. Favourable tax rates mean they’re so cheap to run it seems like a mistake – just £6 per month? Can that be real?

Look beyond the running costs, and the Zoe is a great car. It’s fun to drive, has a pleasant interior and is well equipped: every trim comes with climate control, keyless entry, parking sensors, cruise control, AEB and auto lights and wipers.

The Zoe is best in R135 Rapid Charge form. This version has a 245-mile range, which is plenty for a small electric car, plus 50kW rapid-charging tech, which results in a battery top-up from 0-80 per cent in about an hour. That translates to about 190 miles of range, so long trips aren’t as out of reach as they might seem. Charging at home takes about nine and a half hours – perfectly fine if left overnight.

Hyundai Tucson 1.6 T-GDi 230PS Hybrid SE Connect

  • 0-62mph/top speed: 8.4 secs/127mph

As with most Hyundais, the Tucson is a practical and stylish choice. It’s a mid-size SUV aimed at families, and it’s well suited to that task thanks to its efficient and punchy engines, spacious interior and comfortable ride.

The hybrid petrol engine offers efficiency and refinement. With up to 227bhp it delivers strong performance, yet it’s still really efficient and very quiet, especially on the motorway. There’s lots of room inside the Tucson, with more boot space than many rivals (and estate cars) at 616 litres. It’s easy to load up and get in and out, too. SE Connect trim brings 17-inch alloys, cruise, dual-zone climate control, AEB, keyless start and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with web connectivity.

The Tucson is also good to drive – the controls are light, but still satisfying and the driving position is comfortable. The suspension does a good job of disguising bumps in the road, while remaining composed through bends.

Fiat 500 Electric Icon

  • Price: £29,435
  • Engine/power: E-motor/116bhp  
  • CO2/BiK band: 0g/km/2%
  • 0-62mph/top speed: 9.0 secs/93mph  

If you had your eye on a Fiat 500 as a company car, you might also consider the newer all-electric model. Being an EV, it’s dirt-cheap for company car users, and so are running costs. It’s great value for money compared with its closest rivals, too.

The Icon model comes with 16-inch alloys and a 10.25-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, but it’s the 199-mile range and 85kW charging capability that stand out here. It takes about 35 minutes for an 80 per cent charge at a public charging station.

The 500 isn’t quite as spacious inside as a Renault Zoe, and the three-door body means it’s not as practical, but it’s far more stylish and has all the kit you need. It’s more fun to drive than the petrol 500, because the punchy electric motor means it’s really nippy at low speeds. As with all EVs, the 500 is quiet and relaxing at low speeds – perfect for town driving.

Toyota Corolla 1.8 Hybrid Design

  • Price: £29,385
  • Engine/power: 1.8-litre 4cyl & e-motor/120bhp
  • CO2/BiK band: 110g/km/27% 
  • 0-62mph/top speed: 10.9 secs/112mph 

The Corolla makes a lot of sense as a company car: it’s roomy and practical for the family, efficient enough to keep tax bills low and enjoyable to drive.

The hybrid powertrain means low CO2 emissions and impressive fuel economy – over 60mpg should be possible on a regular basis. It’s easy to drive and quiet around town, yet it’s engaging for keener drivers. There’s a decent amount of boot space – or you can choose the Touring Sports estate – and lots of leg and headroom in the back. 

Design spec comes with 17-inch alloys, auto-dimming and folding mirrors, sat-nav, keyless entry, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and powered lumbar support.
