Peugeot 2008 review - Reliability and safety

Peugeot’s strong showing in recent Driver Power surveys promises plenty for the 2008

Overall Auto Express Rating

3.5 out of 5

Reliability and safety Rating

4.0 out of 5

  • Great combustion and electric powertrains
  • Smart ride and handling balance
  • Build quality
  • Expensive
  • Driving position won't suit everyone
  • Some rivals are more spacious

The 2008 uses the PSA group’s CMP platform, which has already been previously utilised for the Peugeot 208. This, coupled with lots of other shared technology with the smaller car, points towards reliability being more of a positive point than it once was.

In our 2021 Driver Power survey, customers voted the 2008 into an encouraging 12th place out of the top 75 cars listed, while Peugeot itself finished 11th out of 29 brands in the poll for the best car manufacturer - a slight fall from the previous year's 8th position, but still comfortably ahead of Renault, Volkswagen and Ford.

Euro NCAP tested the overall safety of the new 2008 in 2019 and awarded it a four-star rating. This, at first, may appear an obvious backward step from the old-model’s five-star grade, but testing procedures are much tougher now than in 2013, when the model first underwent the industry safety examination.

On-board safety kit is much improved with the Active Safety Brake system included on all versions, as well as Distance Alert, which offers progressive visual and audible driver warnings of the risk of potential collisions. Adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection are also available on higher GT-spec cars.

Warranty

Peugeot offers a 3-year, unlimited mileage warranty for all cars. However, some rival brands do offer more generous cover, including Hyundai (five years) and Kia (seven years).

Servicing

Buyers have the option of taking out a Peugeot fixed service plan to help spread maintenance costs. These are offered for up to five years, with various mileage options available, and can be purchased within the first 12 months of ownership.
