BMW passes one million electrified vehicle sales

For now, most of those sales comes from the firm’s hybrid cars, but BMW says it plans to deliver two million fully electric vehicles by 2025

BMW has reached a new milestone in its electrification strategy. The brand has sold more than one million electrified vehicles, and the firm says this is only the start of its sales drive.

Now, BMW says it will double that figure over the course of the next year, with plans to have two million electrified vehicles on the road by the end of 2025.

However, it’s worth noting that figure includes both BMW’s hybrid and pure-electric vehicles. Around 70 per cent of those one million vehicles comprises the company’s plug-in hybrid cars, such as the 330e and 530e saloons.

BMW is already plotting another ramp-up, though. By 2025, the brand aims to have sold two million pure-electric vehicles and, by 2030, the company says that at least one of every two vehicles sold across the entire BMW Group will be fully electric.

BMW has already set itself along this journey. The firm already has the iX3 and iX SUVs on sale and, more recently, the company launched the i4 – an electric fastback designed to rival the Tesla Model 3. There’s also an electric 7 Series and an electric X1 on the way in 2022.

By 2023, BMW also says it’ll have at least one electric model on the road in around 90 per cent of the market segments it serves – and the company has 10 new electric cars in the pipeline for the next decade.

Looking elsewhere in the BMW Group, MINI will become an electric-only brand by the early 2030s, while Rolls-Royce will exclusively sell electric vehicles from 2030 on. BMW is also working with partners including IONITY to give its EV drivers easy access to more than 250,000 charging points across Europe, with more scheduled to go online in the coming years.

BMW head of product management Dr Andreas Aumann said: “Electromobility needs holistic thinking and implementation. That is why we don’t just offer our customers highly attractive electrified cars; we also make sure charging is easy and convenient.

“Our commitment spans the entire value chain: from compelling products and services through strategic investments, all the way to building our own company charging infrastructure.”
