Using the Dartford Crossing between Essex and Kent is going to cost more in 2011. While the exact date of the rise has yet to be decided, it will go up from £1.50 to £2, with another hike to £2.50 in 2012. 

Ministers say the extra revenue generated will be used to explore improvements to the bridge and tunnel, including the potential of a second crossing further east.

October sees the bridge’s 20th anniversary, but what really rankles is that we were told the tolls would disappear once it had been paid for – a milestone that actually occurred in 2004!
