Anti-skid tech for all new cars

The latest piece of standard safety-kit for new models will be brake assist and stability control

Seatbelts, airbags, anti-lock brakes – all have become legally required safety features on new cars over the years. Next on the list is stability control with brake assist, and from November 2011, all newly launched cars must feature these two electronic technologies as standard.

The former detects loss of steering control, and automatically applies the brakes to help push the car in the right direction. Brake assist technology senses when the driver is pushing the middle pedal for an emergency stop, and increases the pressure of the brake pads on the discs at each wheel.
