New Ford Mustang ‘Mach 4’ promises practicality and pace to tackle the sports saloon elite

Ford has reportedly given select US dealers a sneak peek of its four-door Mustang and it won’t be electric

Rumours have been swirling for some time about potential plans for a four-door version of the iconic Ford Mustang, but now the company has reportedly shown the car at a behind-closed-doors dealer event and there are suggestions it could arrive by the end of the decade.  

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Automotive News, Ford presented a prototype of the four-door ‘Stang that it referred to as the ‘Mach 4’ – a name it trademarked last year. Apparently, it’ll do 0-60mph in less than four seconds and cost under $40,000, which is about £30k at the current exchange rate.

Sources told the WSJ that the Mustang ‘Mach 4’ will feature some form of hybrid powertrain, with one suggesting a hybrid V8 set-up. Whatever the case, it almost certainly won’t be electric like the rather controversial and increasingly outdated Mustang Mach-E SUV.

Attendees at the dealer event reportedly also said that the saloon prototype had a similar silhouette and was roughly the same size as a Porsche Panamera. We assume it will borrow a lot of its design from the current seventh-generation Ford Mustang, and a sharp, aggressive design would set it apart from the more blocky Dodge Charger, which is also available as either a two-door or four-door. 

This isn’t the first time that Ford has publicly hinted at the further extension of the Mustang name. When the current version of the pony car was revealed in 2022, an official sketch depicted a Mustang with four doors. Much further back, there was also a prototype four-door Mustang based on the original coupé in 1965, but this obviously didn’t come to fruition.

If the Mustang ‘Mach 4’ featured a hybridised version of the 5.0-litre V8 engine the two-door gets, that would put it up against Europe’s numerous high performance sports saloons, including the new Audi S5 and RS 5, the revamped Mercedes C 63 coming soon, and the Neue Klasse replacement for the BMW M340i, plus the next-generation M3. 

Of course, we don’t yet know if the Ford Mustang saloon, whatever it's called, will come to Europe. Although, it would certainly align with the brand’s new strategy that’s going to see it focus more on its heritage. This new direction will see many of Ford’s famous household name cars make comebacks, including Fiesta and Focus which are both set to return in the coming years.
