Andy Pringle

Andy Pringle is our chief sub-editor and ensures that every word that is written in the magazine is up to the right standards week in week out.

He has been writing, talking and presenting videos about cars for more than 30 years, and on the staff at Auto Express since March 2019. However, he first worked for the title back in 1992, spending five years on the road-test desk, before leaving for a career that has taken in working for the likes of What Car?, Auto Trader, Carwow and the Daily Express.

He has also been a regular contributor to radio and TV programmes throughout his time in the industry.

Andy says…

“I’ve been working in the motor industry for more than half my life, and I can honestly say it’s more fascinating now than it has been at any time in my experience. It’s not just that we drivers are having to go electric, but also that there seems to be no consensus about how to do that. I love seeing the ingenuity of engineers and designers in coming up with new solutions – and then helping our readers understand what’s going on, before deciding what’s the right solution for them.”

Andy Pringle’s main areas of expertise

  • Family cars
  • Spelling and grammar
  • City driving
  • Heavy metal – music that is, not lardy SUVs
  • Rugby Fives

Andy Pringle Q&A

Q: What was your first car?

A: "It was a white Mk2 Ford Escort 1.3 Popular that I learned to drive in. My proudest moment as a 17-year-old was being told by my mother that I was going too fast – before I had even changed into second gear. The car’s spec was basic, to say the least, with just a radio (not even a cassette player) – and one speaker that wasn’t mounted on anything. It just sat on the transmission tunnel, and fell off if I went round a corner too quickly."

Q: What is your dream car?

A: "Whether it’s a real-world dream car or a money-no-object fantasy, it would have a Porsche badge on it. A Macan GTS has just about the right blend of fun and function for my family life, but my ultimate dream is a Cayman GT4 RS."

Q: If you could change one thing about cars, driving or the car industry today what would it be?

A: "It’s a very simple one: I just want the Government to invest more money in sorting out our roads. They’re in a shocking state."
