Subaru Cosworth Impreza

We pitted the Cosworth tuned Impreza against three of its legendary fore-runners in an exclusive first test.

Subaru Cosworth Impreza

This 395bhp Impreza is the first Cosworth-developed road car since the Ford Escort Cosworth ceased production in 1996. Thanks to an overhaul of the 2.5-litre boxer engine, power leapt by 33 per cent over the standard STi – as a result 0-62mph takes only 3.7 seconds, while the top speed is 155mph. To put this car in context, we brought it together with three classic Imprezas from the last decade in Issue 1,132. In a mile-long drag race, the older cars were left for dead by the newcomer. But it wasn’t anywhere near as fun. The £50,000 price tag was hard to swallow, too.

Zip-merging is fairer, faster and recommended by all the experts. So why do UK drivers refuse to do it?

Steve Walker is completely flummoxed as to why UK drivers can’t get their heads around this simple principle.
