Matt black paint, 345bhp and a limited run of 500 units - the most hardcore hot-hatch got even meaner and we were on hand on drive it

Few cars caused as much excitement this year as Ford’s Focus RS500, which we drove in Issue 1,108. This 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged hatch sends 345bhp to the front wheels, and is the first roadgoing Ford to wear the legendary badge since the Sierra Cosworth. A matt black paintjob makes it more eye-catching than the standard RS, while the handling isn’t corrupted by the extra 45bhp. It’s just a shame only 500 were built – all of which sold out within days!
