Land Rover Freelander 2

Why it won...

The writing is on the wall for newcomers in the compact SUV segment! When it comes to off-road credentials, few firms can match the history and experience of one of Britain’s best loved motoring brands. Land Rover celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, but it shows no signs of slowing down.
A host of new metal has arrived in the past 12 months with the aim of knocking the Freelander off the top of the off-road summit, but the Land Rover’s depth of talent has seen it retain its title as the best compact SUV.

The entry-level Land Rover is accomplished on road and absolutely peerless in the mud, where it feels every bit as capable as models from the class above. It’s this ability, along with its practicality as a family car, which made the Freelander such a big hit with our judges. Its massive 755-litre boot, high-quality cabin and premium image all help set it apart from its rivals.

Our one bugbear with the Freelander is its limited engine line-up, but the 2.2-litre TD4 is such a solid performer that you don’t really need anything else. The company has also introduced stop-start technology this year to help trim the compact off-roader’s CO2 emissions. So, the question remains... will anything be able to remove the Freelander from its position at the head of the field in the year ahead?

Commended

Audi Q5
The German company’s first compact off-roader is an impressive effort. We’ve come to expect classy looks, impressive interior quality and great engines from the firm, but the Q5 also has excellent road manners. It doesn’t feel as rugged as the Land Rover, but car-like dynamics and refinement lift it above the norm.

Ford kuga
The Kuga is commended for the second year running – and with good reason. Its sweet handling chassis and stylish looks still set it apart from rivals. The Ford rides and handles better than many family hatchbacks, and it’s now available in two-wheel drive form, delivering lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy.
