Executive hatch will be more luxurious than ever - and there's hybrid and electric versions in the pipeline, too

The new Audi A3 will be more stylish, luxurious and hi-tech than ever – and Auto Express has full details on the firm’s BMW 1 Series challenger, which will arrive first in sporty three-door form in early 2012.

Previewed earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the new A3 range will consist of four body styles. A five-door Sportback arrives in 2013, but before then there will be this three-door, plus a saloon for the first time. There will also be hybrid versions and an electric model.

Based on official Audi sketches, our exclusive images show how the big-selling three-door will look. It’s more angular than before, and the LED headlights are inspired by those on the facelifted A5 and all-new A6. The large grille is lifted directly from the compact saloon concept Audi displayed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

A sloping roof and chunky rear pillars give it a sportier profile, while the pronounced crease running from front to back along the car’s flanks – called a ‘tornado line’ by Audi designers – will be a feature of all A3 variants.

Audi’s most recent models, such as the A6 and A1, have been praised for their class-leading interior build quality, and the firm plans to continue this trend with the A3. Chunky heater controls and eyeball-style air vents will be lifted from the A1, and a soft-touch dashboard and high-quality materials will be used throughout.

Hi-tech gadgets include a sat-nav system which displays directions on to satellite images taken from Google Maps, and an Internet connection. The engine line-up will comprise 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0-litre turbo petrol units delivering between 105bhp and 210bhp. Diesel options will use 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI engines with the most powerful producing around 170bhp. A frugal TDIe model producing around 100bhp but capable of more than 80mpg is also set to appear.

Audi will also offer all-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, which are expected to arrive late in 2013. No powertrain details have been released yet, but the A3 saloon concept used a 211bhp 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine and 27bhp electric motor. The electric version will borrow technology from the A3 e-tron concept.

Audi’s new hatch will have better handling and more comfort than the current generation, too. It rides on the Volkswagen Group’s new MQB chassis, but will have more aluminium parts than the next-generation Golf – which will use the same chassis – to reduce weight and help improve agility in both two and four-wheel-drive models. Audi Drive Select and adaptive dampers will also be offered as options.

The three-door and saloon models arrive first early next year, while the five-door Sportback and Cabriolet – which is expected to be based on the longer wheelbase saloon, rather than the hatch – will follow late in 2013.

If this is official

It is unpremium and looks like a supermini, despite similarities to the Q3 and A1. Sum of the parts butt uglier than each individually selected.

If this is another failed rendition of yours, you know the drill...

A1/,A3/,A5.... what's the difference?

just boring, but I guess it costs much less to them than having a distinct style for each model.

It will probably look better in the metal!

These impressions look much like an slightly bloated A1, so don't really convey much for me.

Interesting that Audi remain widely copied for their gaping mouth grille, yet many readers seem to complain the range "all looks the same", while rival manufacturers envy the uniformity and instantly recognisable coherence.

Personally I think the benefits accrue most to those who aspire to the A1 or A3, whereas the A5 saloon/sportback, for example, looks not much better for double the money.

The TT still stands almost as a marque in its own right - deservedly so. I still miss my 2002 model, and I still think they look great, and ageing well.

I hope the new A3 is as good as the current one has been.

Come on Wales!

'If this is another failed rendition of yours, you know the drill...' - Quite agree.

Is it me or have Audi designers swallowed a load of ugly pills. The lights back and front are awful on most of their cars. Audis, as with most German makers, are like the 'Russian dolls' that Jaguar's Ian McCallum says Jaguar does not seek to emulate, thank God.
Sorry Audi, excellent cars, well engineered and quality interiors, but not for me thank you.

By tgw123 on 13 October, 2011, 11:16am

oh dear

What's going on? They're starting to look like Vauxhalls, not that that's so awful, but the Vauxhall brand doesn't carry the weight of the four ringed premium brand, thought they'd have realised that the reason they picked up so much market share over BMW wasn't due to the engines or the ride, it's the aesthetics - and that looks to be on it's way out. You could be forgiven for thinking that are Audi just trying to protect the residuals and desirability of their existing fleets, but I somehow doubt it.

If this is how it ends up it’s a shame. Most German car manufactures seem to create a generic design front and back which they apply to the whole range! Yes sir you want an Audi would like it in small, medium, or large? Or perhaps sporty, super sporty, or 4x4? Why cant car manufactures create a defined difference across the range rather than offering the same style just in different sizes!!! I seem to remember in the past you would have a bit of flair and difference spread across the range.

Oh why do I keep getting fooled into looking

Based on official Audi sketches

SO the pictures are a guess.

More and more autoexpress is just putting mock-ups of probably or possible vehicels, and saying it is a scoop. Pathetic.

By fellwalker2000 on 13 October, 2011, 11:10pm

Just so you know

I have finally unsubscribed from the autoexpress email. I am just sick of non news, and of hype. Bye Bye.

By fellwalker2000 on 13 October, 2011, 11:11pm

Audi didn't invent the gaping mouth grille.. if you know your car history..

By hugo_b on 14 October, 2011, 10:45pm

WHERE'S THE TRACING PAPER ?... OH THERE IT IS GOODY

LOOKS LIKE THE EXSISTING A3 BUT WITH A1 FRONT & REAR END... I SUPPOSE IT'LL HAVE A NEW ISH INTERIOR. CAR DESIGN AT IT'S BEST NOT AT AUDI JUST PHOTOCOPYS HERE.

By BEREAL on 15 October, 2011, 9:26pm

individuality gone forever?

Yes it looks like a slightly bigger A1. Nothing wrong with that. Build quality will be excellent. The days of individuality of car design are gone. Ford are standardising the look of their range. Along with Bmw,VW, Porsche, etc. Its the way of thethe world unfortunately.

VAG is totally boring

so there

By jcrowley012 on 19 October, 2011, 8:25pm

New?

This is indeed an enlarged A1. Not that I would expect a new and unique design from Audi's cloning design studios. Although a loyal German car buyer, (10 out of 12) I'm beginning to admire the Koreans for their design courage. Oh and Audi, wake up cause unless you start bringing out cars that are unique last 10 years ago I won't be buying another car from you.

Why guess with photoshops???

It really is getting boring now with Auto Express trying to be the "world exclusives" with their own mocked up photo shopped images that one person thinks the cars will look like!! What is worse is then people beleive this is what the car will look like when it's released and comment that the car maker has made a bad decision!!!! God help us all.....

By putashovelinit on 18 November, 2011, 10:09pm

Can't wait to see it for real

Loved the Actual A3 concept at the motorshow. Excellent quality car with what is going to be a more aggressive grill and look. Audi make striking looking cars with fast lines, the first with cool LED s, angular lights, frugal engines and the best interiors Well done Audi keep them coming.

By A330driver on 22 November, 2011, 7:40am

Would rather not own a car

if it means supporting the gerrman economy.. best place for VW/ Audi is in germany.. Most of the over hyped price goes on the multi Billion pound marketing expenses.. NO thanks Audi I will take the bus ..
Looks like a GolF

By liverpool on 26 November, 2011, 3:13pm

Looks like an A1/A4/A5 etc as stated above they also appear to have pinched the rear end from the Alfa Guiletta or at least copied it with very few changes.

Just more bad german design on the exterior and no doubt the interior will be just as bland and like something from the 80s. Suppose we should be used to it by now though.

A3 or A1?

Looks to me as though the '3' is morphing into the '1'. I love the Audi's but I have to admit I would have expected more dramatic features coming from within the C.A.D. offices.
My second driving school car was an A3 and everyone loved it. Now own an A4 for personal use and love it.
Bought and promptly sold an A1 - simply too cramped! I wonder if there is less interior space now...

A1 grown up at 3 years old and this is how it looks.

Driven by tossers!

the 'new' A4 looks like the last one. Audi designs are so boring I agree with the small, mdium or large comment! When the BMW drivers (tossers) got bored and went to Audi the took their bad manners and lack of driving talent with them. In doing so they made buying and Audi (for most self respecting people) a no go area. Then factor in the Audi's styling has become boring I think Audi's heyday is behind them. You need more than flashy lights to get me excited. And if you are unfortunate enough to already own one, where is the motivation to trade in your old one?

Typo corrections!

Pointless?

I can't really see the point of any Audi smaller than the A4
