Say hello to the best car Volvo has produced in years. If the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 are too obvious for you and you want something different to the ubiquitous VW Golf, look no further than the stylish V40. Its sleek exterior is guaranteed to make a style statement and its unusual interior fits the bill inside.

There is a price to pay for this style, though, because the 335-litre boot is small for modern family motoring needs and the sleek profile robs rear passengers of rear headroom, so it’s not the best choice if you regularly plan to travel with tall grown-ups in the back.

From behind the wheel the Volvo isn’t as sporty as the BMW 1 Series, but there’s plenty of grip, refinement and comfort. The punchy D4 delivers strong performance but the D2 delivers CO2 emissions of only 94g/km, so company car buyers should take notice. And if a plain old V40 isn’t leftfield enough for you, the jacked up Cross Country model and sporty R Design ensure there is a Volvo V40 to suite every taste.

If this is the best Volvo I would hate to drive the worst. I took this out for a test drive and it is the worst new car I have driven in recent years. Comfy seats felt like the webbing had been cut after ten min. The ride gave me a headache and my passenger felt sick it was so choppy. Hand brake by the passengers knee, ok if you want to start something! Gutless engine, not gatso on the sat nav, what more can I say? I really had this down as my first Volvo, not anymore.
