If storing a box for the 50 weeks of the year when you are not on holiday is a problem, the other way to carry skis and boards is on a roof bar-mounted rack.
Most will fit standard roof bars, but check before you buy – some aerodynamic designs require special fittings. The Atera Nova 4 can take four pairs of skis or one snowboard and a set. The large push-button release makes it easy to use while wearing mitts, and at £54.95, won’t take too much out of your holiday budget.
Getting skis off tall 4x4s and MPVs can be a pain and leave you covered in road grime, which is where the Thule Xtender 739 comes in. It slides over the roof edge for easier access, and is priced around £110. No roof bars? No problem – just stick your skis to the roof!
Fapa Taco magnetic carriers cost £94.95 and have coverings to prevent damage. They’re suitable for three pairs of skis, two snowboards or a combination of both.
Soft-top owners will need to consider other options. If you have a BMW Z3, for instance, check out the Fapa Unispider boot rack, from £149.95. This can be used for luggage or with a specific ski rack for another £79.95. For models such as the Mazda MX-5, as well as many classic cars, Moss Europe has a range of kit, with stainless steel, chrome and wooden slatted options. Prices range between £55.95 and £183.95.
