Best superminis for Motability 2022

Use your Motability allowance wisely, and you can get a supermini that's practical as well as fun to drive

Moving up to a supermini from a city car will give you more practicality, with extra boot space and room for three in the back. The latest superminis offer plenty of connectivity too, while standard kit is pretty generous these days.

As superminis have grown in size, the range of their abilities has increased, and many of the latest models are as user-friendly as larger cars, meaning you don't have to compromise by going for one of these smaller, less expensive models.

Motability customers can also benefit from a zero advance payment on several superminis, meaning it's even easier to get behind the wheel.

Our pick of the best superminis on Motability for nil advance payment are listed below...

Renault Clio

The latest Renault Clio is the best yet, sitting right at the top of its class. The Clio is a high-quality item despite its competitive pricing and feels a near-perfect combination of practicality, standard equipment and stylish showroom appeal.

There's a range of petrol and hybrid engines to complement the high level of standard equipment, and all versions come with cruise control with a speed limiter function, automatic folding mirrors, LED headlights and features such as autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition.

There are some small niggles – there’s not much room between the centre console and the clutch pedal so those with bigger feet will have to tuck underneath to reach the footrest. And at some angles, low sunlight can reflect slightly on that central screen.

But, those familiar with the old Clio will be most impressed by the latest car’s interior. A big step forward has been made in terms of build quality, materials used and – perhaps most importantly in today’s market – infotainment.

We’d rather the petrol engine line-up was stronger, but there’s little else to complain about – the Renault Clio is one of the cars to beat in the supermini class. The 142bhp hybrid engine with the well-specced Evolution trim level is the one to go for if you want nil advance payment, or you can upgrade to any other version for extra.

Hyundai i20

Much like Hyundai’s other recent cars, the i20 wasn’t built to occupy a mid-range position in its class. Hyundai has targeted the supermini frontrunners with its latest i20, and has mostly been successful.

The i20 offers smart styling inside and out, including interesting strakes on the door cards and dashboard. Some of the plastics lower down aren’t particularly high quality, but the infotainment system and its glossy screens are. They’re really easy to use and packed with features.

All i20s are five-door hatchbacks with plenty of space, although mild-hybrid versions have a battery pack under the boot floor which reduces luggage space. If you need a little more room, the Hyundai Bayon SUV is heavily based on the i20 and slightly larger. For both cars, the SE Connect trim with a manual or automatic gearbox is available with nil advance payment.

Toyota Yaris

The Yaris has been among the UK’s best-selling cars in recent months and with good reason. This is a supermini that’s quiet, refined and comfortable. Its hybrid engine ensures that it’s inexpensive to run, while its automatic gearbox makes it a doddle to drive around town and beyond.

Even the lowliest Icon specification – the only one available with nil advance payment at the time of writing – gets automatic lights and wipers, smartphone connectivity and a handy reversing camera. Design gets a little more equipment for a minimal initial outlay, while there are versions with panoramic roofs and tech packs if you’re willing to spend more on the initial payment.

As with many superminis these days, every standard Yaris comes with five doors for easy access to the rear seats.
