Three-car garage: used Nissan Ariya, Volkswagen Golf R Estate and Mercedes E-Class Coupe all for £52k

You could have a cool coupé, a bargain-priced electric vehicle and a fast estate for around a third of the price of their modern-day equivalents

We’ve not long driven the new Audi RS 5, BYD Atto 3 and Honda Prelude, and while each of them certainly holds its own appeal, bundle them together and you’re looking at around £170,000. We wondered what you could get on the used market that would do a similar job for a lot less money.

Let’s head to the Auto Express Buy a Car service to see if we can find some eye-catching, affordable alternatives.

Mercedes E-Class Coupe £13,250

It’s refreshing to see Honda has launched a new coupé for 2026, but if you want a bargain-priced two-door that’s refined and feels solid, look no further than the Mercedes E-Class Coupé

At just a fraction of the price of the £40k Honda, the Mercedes looks like a steal, especially when you factor in that this is the E 400 with a 333bhp 3.5-litre V6 engine under the bonnet. That means 0-62mph is sorted in a little over five seconds, while top speed is limited to 155mph.

It’s practical – boot space stands at 450 litres – and if Mercedes’ screen-laden modern interiors don’t cut it for you, there’s a chance to revel in the functionality of the old E-Class’s button-filled dash.

Nissan Ariya - £20,678

Three-car garage - Nissan Ariya

With the Atto 3, BYD is aiming to offer premium appeal at an affordable price with space for a family, but if you want that, why not look to our 2022 Car of the Year, the Nissan Ariya? For just over £20,000, you can get a four-year-old model with fewer than 11,000 miles on the clock. Sure, EV tech has come on over the past few years but we doubt that many will struggle with the Ariya’s 250-mile range and 160kW charging speeds

The Ariya also marked a huge improvement in quality for Nissan when it arrived. The classy cabin design has since gone on to influence new versions of the Juke and Qashqai, while the powered sliding centre console remains a real highlight of the interior.

If this Nissan Ariya was snatched up too quickly for you, there are several more Nissan Ariya's available through our Buy a Car service...

Volkswagen Golf R Estate - £17,491

Three-car garage - Volkswagen Golf R Estate

Keeping the theme with fast estates from the VW Group, the Golf R is a very tempting proposition. First of all, this is the seventh-generation car, so you’ll be getting arguably the most ergonomic interior ever put into a Golf.

Plus, being a later Mk7.5 model, it also gets the upgrades introduced in 2016, with LED lights, digital dials, and an uprated infotainment system

This car also has a more powerful engine; a 10bhp boost over the Mk7’s takes the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit to 306bhp, which is sent to all four wheels.

If this particular VW Golf R Estate has already found a new home by the time you get here, you can find plenty more examples available through the Auto Express Buy A Car service…
