New MG2 to stun the EV world with £20k price tag

The new MG2 will sit on the same platform as the MG4 when it breaks cover in 2026, and our exclusive images preview how it could look

Despite a recent push upmarket with the IM5 and IM6, you’ll be pleased to know that MG hasn’t forgotten what made the brand so successful - cheap and extremely capable cars. The new all-electric MG2 is set to be exactly that, and is likely to cost just £20,000 when it arrives in the UK.

The MG2 is set to be revealed in the second half of 2026 with David Allison, MG’s Head of Product and Planning, recently telling Auto Express that the brand’s entry-level electric car is 12 months away. A full UK market launch is then expected the following year and our exclusive images preview how it could look.

We got our first hint of a new MG EV in March last year when Allison confirmed there would be an all-electric sibling to the MG3. “I think everyone seems to be looking in that area at the moment – B-segment or just below it, around four metres in length, with that magic 20,000-Euro price bracket,” Allison said. “If anyone’s going to do that, we should be right there. There’s an absolute window of opportunity around £20,000. It’s a combination of range, size and price – and if you hit all those three, you’ll nail it.”

Allison reiterated that the MG2 would sit below the MG4 in an “important segment”. However, even if MG manages to keep the new car’s price tag to that £20,000 target by 2027, by then it’ll have plenty of new rivals, including the upcoming Renault Twingo and Volkswagen ID.1 as well as our 2024 Car of the Year, the Citroen e-C3

We’re yet to see the MG2 testing on the road, although we already know the project is well under way. Allison said in 2024, “I’ve seen it already, in fact. I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t fly [off the shelves].”

We know that both the MG2 and an upcoming new SUV will share the same design language as the MGS5 EV and MG4. Our exclusive images take cues from the combustion-powered MG3, which is 4.1 metres long, blending them into a downsized model with pure-electric traits from the popular MG4.

MG benefits from access to Chinese manufacturing and the economies of scale afforded by its parent company, the multi-brand group SAIC Motor. The MG4’s ‘Modular Scalable Platform’ can underpin superminis, so we expect the MG2 to use the same technology. We don’t anticipate the MG4’s largest 77kWh battery will appear in the firm’s smallest EV, but the 51kWh or 64kWh batteries might make an appearance. Both would eclipse the 44kWh pack offered in the similarly sized Citroen e-C3, which has up to 198 miles of range - so we expect a maximum range comfortably north of 200 miles for the MG2.

We’d also expect the new car’s tech to mirror that of the MG3, which gets a pair of screens – a seven-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment display. Safety systems will come in the form of MG Pilot, the brand’s driver-assistance technology that includes cruise control, active emergency braking and lane-change assist on the MG3.
