Ford S-MAX

Ford’s S-MAX beats rivals from Renault, Citroen and Peugeot as best MPV 2010.

Ford S-MAX

Why it won...

This is the car that proves a growing family doesn’t mean the end of fun motoring. With its eye-catching exterior, razor-sharp chassis and adaptable seven-seat cabin, the S-MAX bags this award for a second successive year.

However, bosses at the blue oval haven’t rested on their laurels, with the people carrier benefiting from a thorough overhaul this year in an attempt to fight off the challenge from ambitious new rivals.

A powerful new line-up of EcoBoost petrol engines and revised diesels, as well as an increase in cabin quality, have all helped keep the Ford ahead of the game. Fortunately, the hugely versatile interior layout has been left untouched, as has the excellent ride and handling balance.

Commended:

Citroen Berlingo Multispace
We’re big fans of the practical Citroen – and its Peugeot sister car for that matter. With its honest nature and huge cabin, the Berlingo Multispace makes an extremely likeable and versatile family choice. Sliding side doors and bargain prices only add to its impressive list of plus points.

Peugeot Partner Tepee
Sharing its layout and mechanicals with the Citroen, Peugeot’s Tepee is another brilliant people carrier. As with the Multispace, you’ll have to look past the van-inspired styling, but composed dynamics and great usability make the Partner a practical and characterful MPV contender.

Renault Grand Scenic
It’s nearly 30 years since Renault kick-started the MPV revolution – and the Grand Scenic proves that the manufacturer hasn’t lost its touch. The spacious and well built cabin has clearly been designed with families in mind, while compact dimensions and a strong engine line-up give it hatchback responses on the road.
