Tesla Model S P85D vs Porsche Panamera Turbo S drag race

It’s petrol vs electric as these two luxury executives go head-to-head on the drag strip

Tesla’s Model S keeps getting faster and faster, with the latest models posting 0-62mph sprint times of 2.5 seconds. The P85D we tested here quoted 3.1 seconds, so we decided to put that to the test against a Porsche Panamera Turbo S in a race from 0-100mph and back to 0. It’s the ultimate challenge to test both acceleration and braking.

While the Tesla uses four electric motors pumping out a combined 691bhp, the Porsche makes do with ‘just’ 562bhp. But the Tesla has a lot of added weight thanks to the heavy battery pack, plus electric cars often suffer with acceleration tailing off after a certain point, so will the Porsche’s more balanced power delivery help it to win the race?
