VW Golf GTI vs rivals

We see if the original hot hatch is still the best, as the VW Golf GTI takes on the Renaultsport Megane and Ford Focus ST

VW Golf GTI vs rivals

For hot hatch fans, 2013 is shaping up to be a vintage year. First, the Ford Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTi and Renaultsport Clio 200 made their debuts, and now it’s the turn of the granddaddy pocket-rocket of them all to take a bow: the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Nearly 40 years after it kicked off the hot hatch class, the hot Golf is now in its seventh generation – and it’s out to cement its place in history. Based on VW’s clever new MQB platform, which it shares with the Audi A3, SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia, it promises to be the fastest and most agile version yet. Better still, it has a practical and classy cabin, low running costs and more aggressive looks.

We test it in standard 217bhp guise with the optional DSG box, which pushes the price up from £26,500 to a hefty £27,915. Ready to do battle with the scorching newcomer are two of the fastest family hatches around. In the blue corner is our reigning champ, the Focus ST. As with all fast Fords, it blends blistering pace with a value price and decent practicality.

Completing our trio is the rapid Renaultsport Megane, which still sets the standard for pure driving thrills. So, is the original GTI still the best, or is it living off past glories?

Verdict

Has VW dropped the ball with the latest Golf GTI? In every objective sense, this latest hot hatch is the brand’s best yet. Not only is the Mk7 faster in a straight line than its predecessor, but it provides a lot more grip in corners – no hot hatch is quicker through a series of bends. The Golf also looks more aggressive, boasts a top-notch cabin and makes plenty of financial sense. We just wish it was a little more fun to drive.

While the GTI’s sky-high grip and rock-steady composure will take your breath away, the slightly cold and clinical drive will leave you shortchanged. Still, it does just enough to beat the Renault. If you value driving thrills above all else, then the Megane is still the number-one choice, but the three-door-only layout, high CO2 emissions and GTI-matching price count against it.

However, neither car can topple the Focus. With its blend of engaging driving dynamics, muscular performance and everyday versatility, the ST delivers a true hot hatch experience. Factor in its lower price and lengthy kit list, and the Ford takes a well deserved victory.
