Most reliable family cars

The most reliable family cars to own are revealed with 50,000 Driver Power ratings in 2014

Buying a family car often takes a lot of planning - there are a lot of different things to consider when you're looking for a car that you can use every day but that also has the capacity to meet the needs of the whole family.

Practicality, running costs and comfort are some of the things we look for in our reviews of family cars, but it's often hard to say how reliable a car will be when we review it.

That's where Driver Power comes in - thanks to over 50,000 of you telling us how reliable and good to own your cars are, we can put together a list of the most reliable cars in Britain.

Below you'll find our top 10 most reliable family cars. If you're looking to buy a new car this is a great way of seeing how satisfied owners are with their cars, but do be aware that some models - like the Dacia Logan MCV, the top-rated car in this class - haven't been on sale long enough for the results to fully reflect their long-term reliability.

Driver Power 2014: top 10 most reliable family cars

10. Peugeot 3008

Driver Power reliability score: 90.66%

Thanks to its practical shape, competitive price point and comfortable ride, we rate the Peugeot 3008 highly as a family car - and thanks to the Driver Power results we know it's likely to be pretty dependable, too. It's not the best to drive in its class, and the current model isn't the best looking either, but it's definitely a solid family car choice.

9. Renault Laguna Mk3

Driver Power reliability score: 91.23%

Renault Laguna saloon

Although Renault cut the Laguna from the available range in 2011, it appears that those who bought them are not having many problems - it's a surprise to see the French repmobile in the list, but it appears to be one of the top family cars for reliability. It's a bonus that it's a stylish car that doesn't compromise practicality too much - but remember that if you decide to buy, you'll be getting a used model - so check carefully for faults first.

8. Toyota Avensis Mk2

Driver Power reliability score: 92.58%

The Mk2 Toyota Avensis is a great choice of used family car - it's not the best to drive, but it's rated highly by its owners for reliability, and offers plenty of practicality, reliability and efficiency as well. It's comfortable and quiet too, so it even works well as a daily commuter car when you're not transporting the whole family.

7. Mazda 6 Mk2

Driver Power reliability score: 93.39%

Mazda 6 front

If the Toyota Avensis (above) is a bit too plain for you, then the Mazda 6 is a top choice. It's a very stylish family car that's great-to-drive but it also manages to be really practical aand reliable as well. The solid range of engines is a big plus for the second-gen Mazda 6 so economy and performance are strong.

6. Peugeot 508

The Peugeot 508 is a great option to go for if you're after a stylish family car with a lot of appealing features - like its smart cabin, comfortable ride and efficient engines. It's reliable, too, with an average owner rating of 93.56% in the reliability category of the 2014 Driver Power poll.

5. MG MG6

Driver Power reliability score: 94.11%

MG6 Diesel front tracking

The MG6 has scored very highly in the 2014 Driver Power survey, with it beating the Porsche 911 to the top spot in the road handling category - owners are clearly satisfied with their purchases. This extends into the reliability category, too, with the car reaching 5th place in the family car class.

4. Skoda Superb Mk2

Driver Power reliability score: 95.23%

The Skoda Superb is a very dependable family transport with loads of standard equipment and a high-quality feel, all without a premium sticker price. A wide range of solid engines, a comfortable ride and a huge interior all add up to a great family car, and a top-five finish in the reliability section is good news for potential buyers.

3. Subaru Legacy Mk4

Driver Power reliability score: 95.29%

Subaru Legacy 2.0 ES front static

The Subaru Legacy isn't your standard family car, especially as it's only available as an estate, but it does come with a lot of standard equipment, and it's one of the most reliable family cars on sale today. You get four-wheel drive as well, which means for rural buyers it's definitely worth a look.

2. Toyota Corolla Mk9

Driver Power reliability score: 95.67%

Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla is one of the best-selling cars on Earth, although it's never been too popular in the UK. Its not a very exciting car, and never really was, but it seems from the Driver Power resutls that if you're looking for a used family car, the ninth-generation Toyota Corolla is one of the most reliable choices you can make.

1. Dacia Logan MCV

Driver Power reliability score: 95.84%

The Dacia Logan MCV costs just £6,995, but don't think that corners have been cut to save money on production - its owners have rated it top for reliability in this year's Driver Power survey. Instead of buying a used car, the Dacia Logan MCV could tempt you into buying new.
