Top 10 most reliable family cars
The Mazda CX-30 is the most reliable family car in the 2026 Driver Power survey, nudging the Tesla Model 3 and BMW 1 Series into second and third place respectively. Another Tesla to make this list is the Model Y in sixth place.

1. Mazda CX-30 Mk1 - 93.37%
Japanese brands certainly aren’t a rarity on this list, but it’s usually Toyota or Honda claiming the honours. This year, though, it’s Mazda’s time to shine as the CX-30 small SUV is proving to be as durable with owners as it is enjoyable to drive. While it was pipped at the post by the Toyota Aygo X on the overall ‘most reliable car’ scoreboard, a second-place finish and top spot in the family car class definitely isn’t something to be sniffed at.
2. Tesla Model 3 Mk1 - 92.28%
Not only is the ever-popular Tesla Model 3 the second most reliable family car you can buy, it was also declared the best car to own overall in the 2026 Driver Power Survey. With strong scores across the board, including a first-place ranking for quality, this electric compact executive car makes an extremely strong case for those looking to make the switch to zero-emissions motoring - whether they’re buying new or used.
3. BMW 1 Series Mk3 - 91.79%
The BMW 1 Series is a consistently strong seller in the UK, so there are plenty of people out there putting it to the real-world test in a variety of different situations. It’d appear that this premium hatchback is holding up well for the most part, too. Reliability is clearly taken care of, and there’s more good news as owners are also highly satisfied with the 1 Series’ fit and finish along with the infotainment system. There’s also plenty of driving pleasure to be enjoyed, just as we’d expect from a BMW, so the 1 Series easily lives up to its badge.
4. Volkswagen T-Roc Mk1 - 91.53%
Although it’s based on a Volkswagen Golf, the Volkswagen T-Roc SUV has outperformed its hatchback counterpart in this year’s Driver Power survey. While the Golf still managed a reasonable 18th place on the overall reliability table, the T-Roc achieved a much more impressive fifth. As well as being just that bit more dependable, the T-Roc also brings a bit of added practicality into the mix, making it a very sensible family car choice. These results are for the Mk1 version so we’re interested to see how the new Mk2 car shapes up next year.
5. Ford Kuga Mk3 - 91.29%
While the Ford Puma might get more attention as one of the nation’s best-selling cars, the larger Ford Kuga is also deserving of its share of praise. With steadily high scores in the practicality and safety categories of Driver Power, there’s little doubting this SUV’s capabilities. As is often the case with Fords, owners also praised the level of driver engagement that the Kuga offers, partly thanks to it sharing the same platform as the Focus hatchback.
6. Tesla Model Y Mk1 - 90.76%
It’s two for Tesla as the Model Y also makes this list, but considering that both the Model Y and Model 3 are quite closely related, this may come as little surprise. Another thing that won’t be a cause for shock is that the Tesla Model Y ranked higher for practicality and boot space than its saloon sibling. In fact, it ranked at the top of this category beating every car in the 2026 Driver Power best cars to own results.
7. Toyota Corolla Mk12 - 90.63%
Few people put their cars under more daily strain than cab drivers, and the Mk12 Toyota Corolla has become a very common sight on taxi ranks across the country. If this isn’t enough testament to the Corolla’s reliability, its seventh place finish on this list should certainly seal the deal. Along with its durability, Corolla owners are also highly satisfied with the on-board tech.
8. Peugeot 2008 Mk2 - 90.53%
There’s a select number of people who cling onto the notion that French cars are badly built, but Driver Power suggests it simply isn’t true. While it isn’t the first Peugeot to appear on our most reliable car lists, the Peugeot 2008 has the honour of being the brand’s most reliable family car in 2026. This car’s distinctive styling seems to be striking a chord with owners, too, as they rated it as the fourth best car overall for exterior design.
9. Volvo XC40 Mk1 - 90.48%
Volvos have long been associated with durability, and while their modern offerings are much more complex than ever before, they still appear to up-holding that reputation very nicely. The Volvo XC40 is getting on a bit compared to the majority of the brand's line-up, but its reliability is clearly part of the reason for its continuing sales success. Another factor that’s regularly associated with Volvo is safety and, lo and behold, the XC40 was rated as the second safest car to own.
10. Vauxhall Grandland Mk2 - 90.41%
While the Vauxhall Grandland is often overlooked when compared to SUVs from traditional rival Ford, those who have bought one are a very satisfied bunch. As well as proving itself in terms of reliability, the Grandland also achieved consistently strong scores in several other crucial areas such as interior, practicality, running costs and safety features.
